Hoboken will be one step closer to having a fully public waterfront. The Maritime Park project has been in the works for months, and now construction is set to begin on Phase One. This Wednesday, December 10th, the City of Hoboken is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the future Maritime Park. Construction is set to take place this winter, continuing into spring of 2026. Here’s what we know so far about what the Maritime Park will look like and what Hoboken residents can expect.
The Maritime Park project began back in 2023 when the City of Hoboken acquired the Former Union Dry Dock Site to transform it into the Maritime Park in Uptown Hoboken. Since then, a team led by Dattner Architects has been concepting the design, holding some public meetings to get input from Hoboken locals. The goal is to create a contiguous waterfront park from Pier A all the way down by the Hoboken Terminal up to Weehawken Cove, leading to a fully public waterfront. The construction site is currently located at 901 Sinatra Drive.

The final design for Maritime Park includes details like a big lawn, an upgraded skate park, an expanded beach area, a play area, and more. The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway would be extended through the park along the Hudson River’s edge, bridging the current gap between Hoboken and Weehawken Cove.

This week begins construction on Phase One of the Maritime Park Project. Part of Phase One includes building a new skate park, a public plaza, a living shoreline, and a temporary learning nursery and tree staging area. The skatepark will cater to skaters of all skill levels with a variety of terrain, including “a six-foot half pipe pocket, three- to four-foot flow bowl, a mini ramp, another three-foot mini ramp, beginner-friendly ledges, a Euro-gap, a flat rail, a four-stair with handrail, and a tech pad,” according to the park plans. The City of Hoboken says the team decided on these skatepark features based on community feedback from over 150 skateboarders.
Phase One also includes a living shoreline of natural marshes and tide pools. It will be accessible through a step-down feature called the “Hudson Step Down,” which will allow for educational opportunities and space for additional seating. The shoreline will be made up of “rock sills, seawalls, as well as wave attenuation structures to minimize the effects of erosion and allow for transitional uplands with native plantings that will restore the biodiversity and ecology of the area,” according to the park plans. The City hopes the new habitats will attract a variety of species of animals to contribute to the overall health of the ecosystem.

The public plaza will be built near the skatepark, composed of natural materials and a landscape inspired by the topography and ecology of the Palisade cliffs. There will be seating, shade structures, a water fountain, and park signage welcoming visitors to Maritime Park.
