About Hoboken Montessori School
Hoboken Montessori School (HMS) is a parent-founded early-childhood program with three uptown Hoboken locations:
- 158 14th Street @ Garden Street Lofts
- 1485 Bloomfield Street @ Hudson Tea
- 1499 Washington Street @ Hudson Tea
Situated in family-friendly neighborhoods with convenient access to parks and local amenities, HMS is well-positioned for North Jersey families and commuters. HMS focuses on nurturing each child’s natural love of learning, from the toddler years through extended kindergarten. Every classroom is led by teachers specially trained in Montessori education, emphasizing independence, curiosity, and hands-on exploration.
In 2011, Sejal Vora, a former Hoboken resident, opened the school to provide an authentic Montessori education for her children. Sejal shared with HG, “The most fulfilling aspect of following Dr. Montessori’s approach is witnessing children’s genuine joy and deep engagement in their own learning process. It’s about empowering them to explore and discover their interests at their own pace, fostering independence, self-confidence, and a lifelong passion for knowledge.”

Curriculum + Classroom Experience
Hoboken Montessori School’s curriculum is designed to highlight each unique learner. Classrooms are thoughtfully arranged with intentional flow and easy access to materials, creating a warm and inviting environment that promotes independence and a strong sense of belonging.
Teachers act as guides rather than lecturers, supporting exploration, offering lessons at purposeful moments, and meeting children where they are developmentally. The approach is holistic — centered on social, emotional, physical, and academic growth.
Key elements of the HMS classroom experience include:
- hands-on materials that build problem-solving and fine-motor skills
- mixed-age classrooms that encourage mentorship and leadership
- prepared environments that foster independence and self-direction
- individualized attention that adapts to each child’s learning style
HMS also has curriculum enhancements such as music, art, Spanish, and movement. The result is a well-rounded education that feels authentic, purposeful, and deeply engaging.
Programs
Hoboken Montessori School provides authentic Montessori programming across all age levels.
The academic path begins with the Toddler Program (15 months to 3 years old), followed by the Primary Program (ages 3 to 6). Students then continue into Extended Kindergarten beginning at age 6. The heart of HMS’s early-childhood program is its three-year preschool experience, during which children remain with the same classmates and Montessori-certified head teacher. This stability supports deeper bonds and consistent growth.
The Primary Program expands skills in reading, writing, math, science, geography, and more. Extended Kindergarten builds on this foundation, helping students strengthen their abilities, increase independence, and take on leadership roles.
Advancing through the Primary Program — including Kindergarten and Extended Kindergarten — gives the school a strong understanding of each child’s learning profile, allowing for continuity and tailored support.

What Makes Montessori Different
Montessori education centers on independence, curiosity, and learning through exploration. Rather than traditional desk-based instruction, children move freely, choose materials of interest, and learn at their own pace within a carefully prepared environment.
“These benefits contribute to a nurturing environment where children thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, preparing them for future success,” Director Katie Cullen said.
This approach is especially supportive for children who respond well to hands-on activities and gentle guidance.
