Cannabis dispensaries in New Jersey have been at the forefront of discussions since the legalization of marijuana in 2022. Many eager entrepreneurs are looking to get involved in the ever-growing cannabis industry — and among them is a New Jersey-based celebrity who just opened a dispensary here in Hudson County. Rapper and actor Ice-T has teamed up with The Medicine Woman co-owner, Charis Burrett, to open a cannabis dispensary in Jersey City in March 2025.  As of January 6th, 2025, the dispensary has closed. Read on for what we know about Ice-T’s Jersey City-based dispensary, The Medicine Woman.

About The Medicine Woman

The Medicine Woman was founded by Charis Burrett and her husband, Luke Burrett, back in 2019. It initially began as a California-based non-profit, where it delivered over 300 products to its patients, according to the website.

“Our mission at The Medicine Woman is to provide a full-spectrum of global plant medicines to benefit the health and wellness of our local communities,” the website reads. “We have now expanded to offer more than 1,000 products, have launched our own multi-collection private label product line, and are currently in the development phase of launching our 2nd brick and mortar location.” The second brick-and-mortar location is the recently opened Jersey City spot — and the first is located in Bellflower, California.

The Jersey City Dispensary

Ice-T, also known as Tracy Lauren Marrow, has been in the public eye for decades now. He is known for being a rapper and, more recently, an actor, portraying Fin on Law & Order: SVU. Ice-T and Charis have been close friends for a long time, per Forbes. The collaboration makes a lot of sense; Charis is an expert in cannabis, while Ice-T is deeply familiar with the cannabis industry’s historically disproportionate impact on minority populations. Plus, Ice-T is also well-acquainted with New Jersey. He was born in Newark, grew up in Summit, and currently lives in Edgewater, New Jersey.

“I’ve dedicated my life and career to giving back and paving the way for minorities,” Ice-T previously said in a statement. “As a New Jersey native, I’m excited for the opportunity legalization offers our community, and I look forward to ushering in a new era for cannabis in the state.”

On July 25th, 2022, Jersey City’s Cannabis Control Board approved four Class 5 cannabis applicants — including The Medicine Woman. The other applicants were MedUSA NJ, LLC; Oceanfront Holdings LLC; and The Other Side Dispensary LLC, per TapInto. The Jersey City Cannabis Control Board is in charge of creating and enforcing all things cannabis. All local dispensaries must receive its approval.

The Medicine Woman, which was hoping for a fall 2022 opening, is said to have 5,000-square-feet of retail space, and sells merchandise as well as New Jersey cannabis brands. According to TapInto in 2022, The Medicine Woman had already partnered with some local non-profits, including The Last Prisoner Project, Jersey City Employment and Training Program, Jersey City Mural and Arts Program, and Hudson County Community College.

Updates as of January 2024

In January 2024, The Medicine Woman was “approved by the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC) Wednesday,” January 17th, to sell recreational marijuana, per NJ.com.  In a statement to NJ.com following the approval, Ice-T’s partner Charis said, “We could not be more ecstatic… We are so thankful to Jersey City and everyone involved that has helped us to get to this point.”

At the time, the duo planned to open The Medicine Woman at 660-684 Tonnelle Avenue in the spring or summer of 2024.

January 2026 Closure

An HG reader flagged that the dispensary may have closed over the New Year. As of January 6th, 2026, the Jersey City location of the Medicine Woman has disappeared from the company’s website. The Google listing for the business shows it as ‘permanently closed.’ The Hoboken Girl has reached out to the business for more information and will update this piece when we hear back.

Coffee shops are not hard to come by in a place as big as Jersey City. Whether it’s in Paulus Hook, Journal Square, The Heights, or any other diverse JC neighborhood, locals are bound to come across at least one spot that will satisfy their caffeine cravings. Something that is a rarity, though, is a coffee shop that also serves as a bookstore and an event space for creatives, drawing in all kinds of people with literary and artistic interests. Enter the newest spot to announce its future arrival to the crown jewel of the Garden State: Àbákẹ́ Books + Cafe. This shop, located at 2 Webster Avenue in Jersey City Heights, will be a bookstore, coffee shop, and event venue, all in one. Signage is up in the space as of October 2025. Read on for what we know about Àbákẹ́ Books + Cafe coming to Jersey City Heights this fall.

The Details

Àbákẹ́ Books + Cafe, located at 2 Webster Avenue, will be the newest addition to The Heights’ coffee and creative scene. This space, which is a “one-of-a-kind fusion of literary passion and distinctive coffee flavors,” as per its website, is owned by Jacquees Thomas (aka Peace), a Jersey City resident, writer, and creator of “BLK LIT,” a podcast surrounding black literature.

Upon opening, this shop will feature brews sourced from African regions like Tanzania and Rwanda and provide space for special events and projects, such as podcast recordings and film shoots. Àbákẹ́ will also provide workshops for writers, author events that highlight works from across the African diaspora, and be a spot for local small businesses and creators to host their own classes.

“One thing I love about Jersey City is that there’s a lot of entrepreneurship,” Peace told The Hoboken Girl. “Because of that, there’s an opportunity for learning and for us to share what we’ve learned and what we’re creating with one another.”

Peace decided to bring Àbákẹ́ to The Heights community because she felt that the neighborhood needed a “place where people can convene and celebrate literature and art,” she told HG. Coffee brewing is art in itself and, according to Peace, it tells a story. “Coffee was born in Ethiopia but has traveled across the world and I want to take people on that journey.”

Another reason why she decided to open her business is because she wants to share her love of reading with others. “I truly love being read to and reading to others,” Peace said. “There’s something special about this form of intimate storytelling, and I believe many people miss it and would enjoy it just as much.”

While customers wait for the official opening date, customers can shop a handful of its products on Àbákẹ́’s website. Among the highlights are the Àbákẹ́ Onward Blend, a blend of coffee beans sourced from Tanzania and Rwanda; The Blind Date Mystery Book Gift Set, which comes with a curated book and custom seasonal flower bouquet; and The Coffee Nomad, a travel set that features a coffee cup, bean grinder, stainless steel 600-milliliter kettle, glass sharing pot, coffee filter, travel case, and bag of the Àbákẹ́ Onward Blend.

About Àbákẹ́

For Peace, the shop as well as its name carries profound personal meaning. While doing research into her genealogy, she discovered that “Àbákẹ́” is a name that can be traced to the oldest known family member in her ancestry. It also translates to “To be loved” in Yoruba.

The history behind this new spot is a “powerful alignment of heritage and purpose,” which “inspired the creation of a community-driven haven, one that honors both her roots and the shared connections between people,” according to its website.

Hours

Àbákẹ́ will be open Tuesday to Friday from 8AM to 7PM and Saturday and Sunday from 9AM to 3PM. While the coffee shop will be closed on Mondays and the majority of Sundays, it will accept pickup orders over $25.

The launch of her label, Alexander by Design, began during the COVID-19 pandemic, where she found herself increasingly bored and yearning to channel her creativity. One day at home, she stumbled upon an old farmer’s market basket, pulled out fabric swatches and trims, and began attaching them. The fabric depicted the Amalfi Coast, and inspiration struck. As the world reopened, someone asked to buy the bag before she even left her building, her first order. More compliments followed, including from a boutique owner who offered to sell her bags. After research confirmed no similar product existed, her business was born.

With a fresh approach to fun and luxury, her brand’s debut collection focuses on handbags that embody her unique vision. With the motto, “Wear it with Luxury,” fashion enthusiasts can anticipate many seasons of innovative and exquisite designs.

“When a client learns anything from me that makes them feel more empowered in giving birth, that sets forth such a beautiful and positive ripple effect,” she said. “Giving birth is something that women tend to remember in detail for the rest of their lives, so being even a tiny part of making it a more peaceful, empowered experience will affect generations to come!”

Parker Foster | Writer, Director, + Filmmaker

Parker Foster is a writer and director based in Hoboken. He directs commercials, short films, and documentaries. Parker has gone on to win several awards, including Dallas Filmmaker of the Year and a Webby for Mental Health Film of the Year when he was just 18. What inspires Parker most is curiosity, the kind that stirs questions deep within about life, purpose, and what it means to be human. Filmmaking has become his way of exploring those questions, a lens through which he seeks understanding and meaning.

If he could inspire someone in just one way, it would be this: to believe in who they are and take a chance on the dream that keeps them up at night. Too many people reach the end of their journey with a quiet regret, saying, “I wish I had done that one thing.” Parker wants to be a voice that says, “Go for it. Chase it. Even if you stumble, there’s power in trying, and freedom in knowing you gave your dream a shot.”

Since moving from Brooklyn, a place buzzing with creative energy and surrounded by peers, he didn’t expect to feel so grounded somewhere new. But Hoboken surprised him. “There’s a warmth here, a quiet beauty in its streets, and a sense of belonging that runs deeper than he imagined. It feels like home in a way Brooklyn never quite did,” Parker said. He wants others to feel that too, to be part of something creative and meaningful in a place that welcomes newcomers with open arms.

Parker’s local favorites: Sweven + Antique 112

Here in the Hoboken and Jersey City area, locals contribute to their neighborhoods in all kinds of ways, from raising funds to help cancer patients, teaching residents to fish off the local piers, or being purely being a business owner serving the community. Every month, The Hoboken Girl aims to highlight 10 individuals making a difference in their communities, and for May, we’re doing just that. Read on for a list of people to watch in Hoboken + Jersey City for May 2025.

Chelsie Scarafile is a geotechnical engineer affiliated with the NYC-based consulting firm, H+H, and a Union City BNR. Last year, Chelsie was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, and after undergoing chemotherapy, she is now in remission. During her treatment, she went on a trip for young adults with cancer, where she met another cancer survivor who introduced her to the Leukemia + Lymphoma Society’s Visionaries of the Year campaign, a 10-week fundraising challenge where candidates and their teams raise funds for different pillars of the LLS mission from February 20th to May 2nd. “When I learned what the Leukemia + Lymphoma Society (LLS) does for patients — even the smallest things like arranging clean, safe rides to treatment or offering financial support so loved ones can be there during chemotherapy — I knew I had to get involved,” Chelsie told The Hoboken Girl.

With a focus on patient support, Chelsie and her team of 15 formed the advocacy group, Crushing Cancer (Chelsie’s Version), and, with an original goal of $15,000, the team has raised over $30,000. The group has now set a new goal of $50,000. “My hope is to give back to the community that supported me, and to help ensure that others going through treatment have the resources they need, especially those who may not have been as fortunate as I was during my journey,” Chelsie told The Hoboken Girl.

Chelsie’s Local Favorite: Alfalfa

His friends and family saw his musical potential before he did. “They pushed me to share my voice, and now there’s no turning back,” he told The Hoboken Girl. Influenced by icons like James Brown, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, and Prince, XXLTARIK writes and sings over atmospheric instrumentals, releasing tracks like “RUNAWAY,” “PLOTTIN,” and “BAD FRIENDS.” “My music is born from real experiences — late-night conversations, the psychology of attraction, the pulse of the club, and the lingering quiet moments that stay with you,” he shared with HG. XXLTARIK’s goal is to continue creating music “where [people] can lose themselves in.” “I want people to hear my music and feel like they belong—the one making the moves, setting the tone, owning their power.”

Rapper and actor Ice-T has teamed up with The Medicine Woman co-owner, Charis Burrett, to open up a cannabis dispensary in Jersey City. On July 25th, 2022, the duo and their marijuana dispensary — along with three other Class 5 retail applications — were approved by the Jersey City cannabis control board. Over a year later, Ice-T + Charis were officially approved by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission The Medicine Woman is now in its soft opening stages at 660-684 Tonnelle Avenue as of March 27th, 2025.

In a statement to NJ.com following the approval, Ice-T’s partner Charis said “We could not be more ecstatic… We are so thankful to Jersey City and everyone involved that has helped us to get to this point.”

At the time, the duo planned to open The Medicine Woman at 660-684 Tonnelle Avenue in spring or summer of 2024.

Though Hoboken is often known for its Italian, Irish, or German roots, three Hobokenites have displayed black excellence on the international stage, or — in the case of Dorothy Blackwell McNeil — brought international black excellence to Hoboken. The Hoboken Girl has chosen three notable Black Hoboken residents to share with readers in honor of Black History Month. Read on for more about Joe Jeannette, known as the West Hoboken Ironman; musician Blind Tom Wiggins; and club owner and music icon Dorothy Blackwell McNeil.

Jeremiah “Joe” Jeanette

Hudson County is known for its prodigious breadth of boxing talent, and one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of the 20th Century hales from West Hoboken, today’s Union City.

Jeremiah “Joe” Jeanette, “the West Hoboken Iron Man,” holds the distinction of fighting the longest boxing match of the 20th century, clocking in at 3.5 hours and lasting 49 rounds on April 17th, 1909 in Paris. There, he battled Sam McVey to win the “World Colored Heavyweight Championship.”

Joe very well may have become the Heavyweight Champion of the World, were it not for Jack Johnson: not because of Jack’s superiority, but because once Jack became the Heavyweight Champion, he refused to fight black boxers, including Joe, despite many and frequent challenges.

Read More: Black-Owned Self-Care + Wellness Businesses in Hudson County

Joe and Jack fought 10 times, Joe losing twice, winning once (but Jack was disqualified in the second round), drawing twice, and the remaining five fights were deemed “No Decisions.” Jack called Joe “the toughest man I ever fought,” though Joe thought it reprehensible that Jack refused to fight once he’d won the title. Joe was quoted as saying: “Jack forgot about his old friends after he became champion and drew the color line against his own people.” Despite a 15-year career and outstanding record, Joe was never permitted to fight for the title of the Heavyweight Champion of the World.

After retiring from boxing in 1919, Joe starred in the 1922 silent film, Square Joe, a boxing movie portraying an innocent boxer mistaken for killing a policeman during a raid to infiltrate the illicit gambling underworld.

Though he retired at the age of 40, Joe continued to build upon his boxing legacy by founding a gym in West Hoboken at 2612 Summit Avenue, in today’s Union City. There, he trained a new generation of boxers, including Heavyweight Champion of the World James J. Braddock, better known as “Cinderella Man,” and namesake of Braddock Park in Union City.

Confronted with institutional racism throughout his career and training world-class boxers — regardless of race — Joe fought opponents within the ring and for equality outside of the ring.  Union City celebrated its native son by naming Jeanette Street in his honor.

A plaque was located at 27th Street and Summit Avenue in Union City, though it has mysteriously disappeared as of the publication of this article.

Editor’s Note: In our research, HG found that Joe’s last name was spelled both Jeannette and also Jennette. We used Jeanette, as it matched the Union City Avenue name.

Blind Tom Wiggins

One of the greatest and best-known black musicians of the 19th Century, Blind Tom Wiggins, retired from fame to Hoboken, settling in the “Yellow Flats,” on 12th and Washington Streets.

Born blind and enslaved, a savant and prodigy, Tom couldn’t perform ordinary tasks demanded of an enslaved person, but at the age of five could already reproduce upon the piano the pitter-patter of rain upon a tin rooftop — thereby composing his first tune: The Rain Storm.

At the age of eight, his enslavers hired “Blind Tom” out to tour throughout the United States earning $100,000 a year ($1.5 million a year today) — making him the 19th century’s highest-paid pianist.

In 1860, Tom played at the White House for President James Buchanan, becoming the first African-American to perform at the White House, which was attended by Mark Twain.

Miraculously, Tom could perform several musical scores simultaneously. In 1862, an astonished Confederate soldier recounted Tom’s recital:

“One of his most remarkable feats was the performance of three pieces of music at once. He played ‘Fisher’s Hornpipe’ with one hand and ‘Yankee Doodle’ with the other and sang ‘Dixie’ all at once. He also played a piece with his back to the piano and his hands inverted.”

Members of the audience began to challenge Tom, playing uncirculated compositions that Tom could repeat verbatim. At the end of the Civil War, Tom’s former enslavers took him on a European tour, with Tom aged 16.

Many historians, such as Oliver Sacks in Musicophilia, have concluded that Tom exhibited symptoms of autism, and even with slavery abolished following the Civil War, Tom continued to live in the custody of his former enslavers, the Bethune Family.

After a protracted custody battle, Tom’s guardianship was awarded to Eliza Stutzbach, the second wife of John Bethune. Eliza seemed to have a bond with Tom, able to soothe his erratic and sometimes aggressive behavior.

Tom spent the next 10 years, with Eliza and her new husband on the vaudeville circuit, until Tom’s health began to wane. In 1904 Tom likely experienced a stroke, and after the death of her new husband, Eliza and Tom moved to Hoboken, retiring from public view. The only people able to hear Tom’s famed piano playing were his neighbors who through the Yellow Flat walls could enjoy Tom plucking the keys in the bright hours of a morning’s allegro or in the requiem of a moonlit sonata.

Dorothy Blackwell McNeil

While Dorothy Blackwell McNeil is not a nationally recognized name, she has done more to bring world-renowned black culture to Hoboken than any other person in Hoboken’s history. Though many remember Maxwell’s for its music legacy, just as important was Dorothy and her work at Club Zanzibar to create a heritage for black music in Hoboken.

Club Zanzibar operated from 1961-1981 at 601 1st Street in Hoboken. Established by James Smith (Zimp) and Charles McNeil, Dorothy was hired as a server, but her tenacity and drive soon had her promoted and a workplace romance blossomed into a marriage between Dorothy and Charles. Zimp left Club Zanzibar, and Dorothy assumed more responsibility, especially as Charles was often away on business.

Under Dorothy’s ownership and management, Club Zanzibar drew some of the most famous black musicians to Hoboken.

Wilson Pickett, a key figure in American soul music, sang his timeless hits In the Midnight Hour, Land of a Thousand Dances, 634-5789, and Mustang Sally in Hoboken.

Artist Millie Jackson performed spoken word monologues in Hoboken, thereby becoming “the mother of hip-hop” as an early progenitor of rap — making Hoboken an early stage for rap. Bayonne’s The Ad Libs sang their doo-wop anthem, The Boy from New York City, at Club Zanzibar.

Dorothy’s story has been collected into a chapbook entitled Recollections of Dorothy McNeil as a part of the Hoboken Oral History Project led by the Hoboken Historical MuseumHer image is memorialized in a mural painted by graffiti artist DISTORT at 1320 Adams Street, viewable by the 14th Street Viaduct.
