About The Skatepark

The new Maritime Park Skatepark will take over the former Union Dry Dock site at 901 Frank Sinatra Drive along the Hoboken waterfront. Recently, the City of Hoboken revealed engineered images capturing the first look at the park’s future design. The area will include a new skatepark, a public plaza, and a “living shoreline.”

The City of Hoboken shared via press release that, based on feedback from the community following an in-person skatepark meeting and a survey of over 250 respondents, 63% of participants identified as skateboarders, prompting the plans. The skatepark will include street-style features along with a six-foot half pipe pocket, a 3-4 foot flow bowl, a mini ramp, beginner-friendly ledges, a Euro-gap, flat rail, four stairs with handrail, and even a tech pad.

Near the skatepark will be a public plaza designed from natural materials inspired by the topography and ecology of the Palisade cliffs. Within the plaza, locals will be able to find seating, shade structures, a water fountain, and welcoming park signage. The entire park is about 8.7 acres in size which includes 4.5 acres of land and 4.2 acres of water.

Additional Features

Aside from the skatepark itself, the first phase of Maritime Park updates will include the design of a living shoreline, which will include marshes, tide pools, and rock sills that can be accessed through a special step-down area that will be called the “Hudson Step Down.” The area will also include wave attenuation structures to help cut down on erosion, which are ultimately constructed to restore biodiversity and ecology in the area. The City of Hoboken shared via press release that “The new habitats are anticipated to attract a variety of species like Atlantic mud crab, monarch butterfly, snowy egret, marsh wren, piping plover, western honeybee, great blue heron, blue crab, fish species like the Atlantic silverside, and filter feeders like ribbed mussels that will also contribute to the overall health of the ecosystem by promoting nutrient cycling and water filtration.”

A trusted team of consultants, including SCAPE, Colliers Engineering + Design, and Action Sports Design, are also working to integrate more plant life to open a learning nursery and tree staging area. This will help native plants grow, which can later be used for other phases of the park’s construction. The City will seek to bid and award a contract for the first phase of construction by fall 2025.
