Winter is in full force here in Northern New Jersey: zipped coats, chilly mornings, packed schedules, and spring still feeling far away. But if you’re a New Jersey parent already dreaming of summer, you’re not alone — and camp sign-ups and seasons come quickly. Between juggling busy schedules and counting down the days until warmer weather returns, it’s only natural to start picturing sunshine-filled days, outdoor adventures, and those classic summer camp memories that kids (and parents) talk about for years.

The good news? That magic exists. Located at 200 State Route 181 in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, Willow Lake Day Camp has been bringing summer magic to local families for more than 40 years. Trusted year after year, the camp focuses on what matters most to parents: communication, safety, and the assurance that every child is cared for throughout the day. Read on to learn more about what sets Willow Lake Day Camp apart from other New Jersey summer camps.

Willow Lake Day Camp

Why Families Choose Willow Lake

Parents today have no shortage of summer camp options in New Jersey. What truly sets Willow Lake apart is its attention to every detail and every camper,  along with its excellent communication and a warm, caring atmosphere. With age-appropriate facilities and equipment and a dynamic program that grows with campers as they get older, every child is seen, supported, and valued. Nothing is treated as “minor,” whether it’s managing allergies and health concerns or sunscreen applications and daily check-ins.

“Families often say Willow Lake feels more like a sleepaway camp experience with the comfort of coming home every night,” according to its Director, Charles Maltzman.

Set on 35 acres along the north shore of Lake Hopatcong, Willow Lake is a family-owned and operated camp that has been welcoming campers ages 3-15 since 1980. Families come from across Hudson, Essex, Morris, and Union Counties, including many right here in Montclair and the surrounding area, and are drawn by the camp’s reputation for safety, variety, and care.

A Day at Willow Lake

At Willow Lake, the day doesn’t just start when campers arrive. It starts the moment kids get on the bus. Bus rides are fully programmed with games, trivia, and age-appropriate music playlists, setting the tone for a fun, engaging day. Upon arrival, campers are greeted by smiling counselors and brought to their designated arrival areas before jumping into a well-balanced schedule of Aquatics, Athletics, Arts, and Adventure.

Younger campers are exposed to a wide variety of activities, while campers entering 2nd grade and older begin to customize part of their day through elective choice, which builds their independence and confidence over time. The facilities are thoughtfully designed so even the youngest campers can hit a homer, zip line, climb, swim, and create art in spaces built just for them.

With four heated pools, campers receive daily small-group swim instruction from one of Willow Lake’s 40 certified lifeguards, followed by recreational swim time to cool off in the afternoon. It’s the kind of place where kids feel confident, cared for, and excited to come back each day- sign us up!

Across the property, campers get access to:

  • 20 sports fields and courts
  • 2 lakes for boating and fishing
  • 15 dedicated art areas
  • 6 zip lines and 3 adventure parks
  • 2 cooking studios
  • A full theater program featuring productions like Shrek, The Lion King, and Wicked

No two days feel the same, and every day is intentionally structured to balance fun, growth, and safety.

Keeping Campers Safe at Willow Lake

Safety is at the heart of everything Willow Lake Day Camp does. The camp employs over 150 teachers and nearly 200 high school and college-aged staff members, many of whom return year after year. Two full-time team members focus just on hiring and staffing, making sure every program has the best people in place. Each camper has 2 – 4 dedicated counselors, depending on age, so there is always a familiar face around and every activity is supervised by trained adults, coaches, or teachers.

Willow Lake’s 40-person Leadership Team includes educators, school counselors, and seven full-time registered nurses, overseeing two fully staffed on-site health centers. The owners and directors work year-round planning for camp and are on-site every single day throughout the summer, making sure everything runs smoothly and every camper feels supported.

Hands-on Leadership and Expert Directors at Willow Lake

For many families, Willow Lake represents important firsts. The first time sending a child to a non-local camp, the first time their kid rides the bus, and the first step toward independence. The directors take that responsibility seriously, creating a true partnership with parents built on trust and communication.

As parents themselves, the leadership team pays attention to both the obvious and the overlooked, from hydration and sunscreen to emotional support, confidence-building, and teaching the “soft skills” that screens can’t. Their philosophy centers on helping campers grow, try new things, build friendships, and gain skills that extend far beyond the summer months.

A great camp experience isn’t just about what happens during the day. It is also about peace of mind for parents. At Willow Lake, details like transportation, meals, and communication are thoughtfully planned to help ensure campers are safe, happy, and well cared for.

Transportation
The camp offers central-location bus pickups in many surrounding towns. Buses are seatbelt-equipped, inspected daily, and driven by professional, year-round drivers. Two Willow Lake counselors ride each bus to ensure both safety and fun, and fewer stops mean quicker, safer rides.

Food & Allergies
Campers receive a morning snack, a full hot lunch, and an afternoon ice pop each day. Willow Lake works with an experienced caterer who serves school districts and is fully equipped to handle allergies and special dietary needs like celiac, kosher, and more. All of the camp is nut and seed free. Lunch includes hot meals plus salad, pasta, bagel, and sandwich bars, fresh fruit, yogurt, and more, with staff seated alongside campers to ensure everyone is eating well.

Communication
“Clear, consistent communication is incredibly important to us,” says Charles Maltzman, Director at Willow Lake. “From prompt responses to calls and emails to weekly newsletters and daily access to more than 1,000 private photos, we want families to feel connected to their child’s camp experience every step of the way.” Willow Lake is widely praised for its customer service and transparent communication. Families receive prompt responses to calls and emails, weekly newsletters, and access to over 1,000 private photos posted daily, so parents can truly see their child’s camp experience unfold.

The Snack Bar, located at 520 Adams Street, is the newest addition to Hoboken’s dining scene this fall. The spot has two concepts in one building: a classic bar serving food from Otok Bakery, and an “open play” space for kids and birthday parties. The inspiration for this space comes from the team’s desire to have a fun spot for multi-generational groups to gather without sacrificing comfort or high-quality food and beverages, and recently soft opened in town. Read on for more about The Snack Bar in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Opening Timeline

The Hoboken Girl exclusively learned back in May of 2024 that The Snack Bar was making moves to open in Hoboken. The team has since provided a few updates on the space via Instagram since the initial news came out, and announced on Tuesday, August 26th, 2025 that The Snack Bar was aiming for an October 2025 opening.

“Big update from The Snack Bar

We know it’s been a little quiet on our end, and things have taken longer than expected (as these projects often do ). But the wait is almost over—construction is moving full speed ahead and we’re thrilled to announce that we’re hoping to open our doors this October!

We can’t wait to welcome you in, share what we’ve been working on, and finally bring The Snack Bar to Hoboken. Thank you all for the patience, support, and excitement—it means the world to us.

Stay tuned for sneak peeks and opening date details. The countdown is officially on”

The team shared with HG last week that it was making moves towards opening soon, and the space has now soft opened in Hoboken.

About the Concept

Bill and Maren Schmitt are the team behind Hoboken businesses Schmitty’s, located at 359 1st Street, and Otok Bakery, located at 506 Grand Street. They are also parents of two young children, so they’re on the weekend playdate-and-birthday-party circuit. They kept noticing there wasn’t a good place for multi-generational groups to spend time together. “We were at my nephew’s birthday party and the grandparents didn’t even want to go because it was at a play space with no seating,” Bill said. “We’ve had kids come and hang out at Schmitty’s but that’s not ideal.”

Bill and Maren, along with sister-in-law Amanda Schmitt started thinking about what kind of space would work for all generations to spend time together. Maren grew up in Germany and said that indoor playspaces where adults can socialize and have drinks while the kids play are common. “When we visit Germany, we’re at a playspace maybe once or twice a week,” she said.

The space at 520 Adams Street, a long-closed bar, seemed tailor-made for the two-in-one concept that the team had in mind. “The front is a pretty standard bar, with a long wooden bar,” Bill said. “But the back is a big space with 15-foot-high ceilings. It seemed like the perfect fit for a play space.”

What to Expect

snack bar

The original plan was to have a custom-built, two story jungle gym in the back area, but the team shared with HG last week that they thought a fixed structure was too limiting with certain ages. Instead, the front half will house the bar, and the back half will house an “open play” space that can also be used for birthday parties while the parents hang out in the bar space.

The team has also worked with sound engineers to test the range of noise from the facility. “We will add sound mitigating materials to the interior of the space,” Bill said.

“In Hoboken, most people live in an apartment or maybe have a tiny yard. It can be hard to get kids outside,” Bill said. “Especially on rainy days when you can’t go to the park, there are even fewer options. Having a space like this means kids can get their energy out in a safe, clean space.”

Bill and Maren pointed out that the space’s kid-friendly vibe means parents don’t have to worry if their kid cries or makes too much noise. “It could be someone else’s kid, and the space is for that,” Bill said. “Parents don’t have to be worried or embarrassed about their kid being loud.”

The front half of the space is a classic bar. The team serves food from Otok Bakery and has a fully stocked bar. “The glassware will be nice, but it will also be shatter-proof,” Bill said. The same high-end coffee and espresso drinks served at Otok will also be available at The Snack Bar.

The team will have birthday party packages, with partial and full rentals of the playspace and food from Otok Bakery. The team is also considering a subscription model to encourage parents to come back without their kids for discounted food and beverages.

More than anything, Bill and Maren want The Snack Bar to be a place for community. “We want to foster a community among the parents and kids,” they said. “We want people to use our space as a launching pad for other activities, making plans to do other things with parents and families they meet here.”

A new youth ball hockey program hosted by the New Jersey Devils will kick off in Hoboken this week. Back in the spring of 2024, a partnership was formalized between the City of Hoboken and the National Hockey League’s (NHL) New Jersey Devils. The Devils have since contributed upwards of $200,000 to renovate Hoboken’s Multi-Service Center Roller Rink at 124 Grand Street, and the rink opened to locals in October 2024. On Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, the Devils and the City of Hoboken will officially commence their youth ball hockey program, including a brief ceremony before the first clinic featuring special guests. Read on for more about the rink and the New Jersey Devils’ new youth ball hockey program in Hoboken, NJ.

Per the Devils’ website, the clinics will focus on fun, skills, drills + game play. The Devils will also provide all sticks, balls, nets, and pinnies — no equipment is necessary. The program is for ages 5-17.

Registration is now closed, but you can stay updated with any future programs on the website.

Per information sent out to those who signed up for the program, the New Jersey Devils will host a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony before the first clinics on October 1st. Attendees can also expect “a few very special guests from the City of Hoboken, NHL, and New Jersey Devils,” including Devils alumni Bruce Driver, the Devils team mascot, and more.

About the Partnership + Rink

The New Jersey Devils spent a total of $240,000 on the Johnny Ray McDonald, Jr. ‘Diddle’ Hockey Rink at the Hoboken Multi-Service Center, located at 124 Grand Street. Per the contract in partnership with the City of Hoboken, $230,000 went toward physical renovations of the roller rink, and another $10,000 was spent on personnel and administration for hockey programming and instruction. The money was meant as a donation to the community.

The work on the existing facility included “removal and disposal of the old boarding system, patching and leveling of the rink surface and installation of dasher board curb footing, a new dasher board system and new rink flooring and acquisition of new ball hockey equipment,” per the contract. Work took place for several weeks starting in August 2024, and the rink officially reopened to Hoboken locals on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024.

best corn mazes north jersey

New Jersey is home to some awesome corn mazes, which make for a great autumn activity. A corn maze is a path cut through a cornfield when the plants are young, so as they grow tall, they grow into the pattern. The maze itself can be as simple or as complex as the farmer chooses, and many mazes are designed to be specific images when viewed from above, such as a sports team logo or a slogan. Since the time spent outdoors in the maze can vary, be sure to bring enough water, sunscreen, and bug spray. The maze is in a field, so the ground may be muddy or wet; prepare accordingly. Exploring a corn maze is a fun and easy way to enjoy some fresh air and new scenery — and all of these mazes are at gorgeous farms with plenty of other activities and offerings in addition to the maze. Read on for a list of corn mazes locals must visit in Northern New Jersey.

A. Casola Farms | 178 State Route 34, Holmdel

Not only does A. Casola Farms have the market cornered with the original pick-your-own-pumpkin and hayride farm. The crew also has two incredible mazes for visitors to enjoy. First up is the corn maze: five acres of corn planted and then cut down to create three miles of intricate trails. The farm also has a sunflower maze, so visitors can live out their Alice in Wonderland fantasies of flowers taller than them, with drooping blooms and bright petals. The Fall Festival runs through October, and both locations are chock full of things to do. Be prepared that the corn maze is available only on weekends. Stop by the farm’s social media pages on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with any last-minute changes.

This family-run farm is 170 acres, and the current farmers are the fifth and sixth generations in the same family to run the farm. While visitors are welcome at the farm during other seasons, fall has the most to offer. There are three corn mazes available at Bullock Farms. Two are for younger kids, and the third is for everyone else. The main maize (sorry, couldn’t help it) is four and a half acres carved into a hill. Explorers find their way through the maze and finish the maze on a platform overlooking the farm. The corn maze runs from September 20th to October 26th. The farm is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until 5PM (though the corn maze stops admitting people by 4:30PM). Keep up with the farm on its Facebook and Instagram pages for the latest information.

Donaldson Farms | 358 Allen Road, Hackettstown

Donaldson Farm’s Fall Fun Harvest Weekends are filled with all the best fall activities, including a corn maze. Each year, the maze, open from September 7th to October 31st, has a different theme and supports a different charity. This year, the farm will be donating $1 from every corn maze entry purchase to Special Olympics New Jersey in Hunterdon/Warren Counties, an Olympic sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Past designs have included the Statue of Liberty, a Salute to Healthcare Workers, and Tunnel to Towers. The maze itself is nine acres big and designed for kids of all ages. Check in with the farm on Facebook or Instagram to see any last-minute changes.

Etsch Farms | 556 Buckelew Avenue, Monroe Township

The corn maze at Etsch Farms is another classic, year after year. Past years’ images included a pirate ship, barn animals, and several different iterations of the farm’s logo. The maze itself is eight acres and has a crossword puzzle to do inside. Smaller explorers will enjoy the scaled-down corn maze. There is also a hay bale creation that goes along with each year’s theme. The fall festivities begin on weekends in September. The 2025 theme has yet to be announced. Stay up to date with the Farm via its Facebook page.

Fairfield Farms | 177 Big Piece Road, Fairfield

The corn maze at this Essex County farm was designed with children in mind, so it’s not too challenging or too tall. The corn maze is part of the farm’s Fall Festival, which opens on September 20th and runs through October 31st. Other activities are available, including pumpkin picking, hayrides, and climbing hay bales. The farm market has all kinds of seasonal produce and goodies available, including fresh apple cider. Visit the farm on Facebook to check on any last-minute schedule changes.

For years, Happy Day Farm has been recognized for unique corn maze designs, including Rutgers University’s 250th Anniversary, 4 Jersey Celebrities, and Superheroes. Past year’s themes included Super Mario and 10 Years of Happiness in honor of the farm’s 10th anniversary. This year’s theme, U.S. Army, celebrates the army’s 250th anniversary. While visiting the corn maze, there are plenty of other games and activities to keep guests occupied while they solve the maze, such as trivia and Maize-Opoly. The corn maze is part of the farm’s Fall Harvest Pumpkin Festival. The Festival is open on Saturdays and Sundays and one Friday in October. Advanced ticket purchase online is required. On-site purchases are cash only. Keep up with the farm via Facebook and Instagram to learn about the latest schedule changes and other updates.

Hacklebarney Farm | 104 State Park Road, Chester

As you come around the bend and the cheerful red barn comes into view, you know you’re in for a fun day at Hacklebarney Farm. The corn maze at Hacklebarney has one of the longest ‘seasons’ around — it opens in late August and runs until November, so that means visitors can get plenty of tries to perfect their pathway. Hacklebarney’s farm market sells ice cream, fresh-baked pies, and other goodies, as well as apple cider pressed on-site. HG‘s favorite treat is the apple cider float, which, if you’re lucky, will be made with cider pressed just that day. Be sure to check out the farm’s Facebook page for any last-minute updates.

Heaven Hill Farm | 451 State Route 94, Vernon

The Great Pumpkin Festival at Heaven Hill Farm, which opens on September 13th, has a ton of activities for kids of all ages, but we’re most excited about the corn maze. The maze takes up 10 acres and has routes for both little kids and everyone else. There are built-in games within the maze, so there really are challenges around each turn. There is also a hay maze for the little ones — the walls aren’t so high, and it’s a lot easier to call for help. Parking is free, but tickets are required. It’s open seven days a week. Visit the farm’s Facebook or Instagram to keep up with the latest information.

Lentini Farms | 251 High Street Route 94 South, Newton

This farm has four stands to visit for your fruit fix, but there’s only one stop for the corn maze. Each fall, Lentini Farms creates an amazing new design on its 10-acre plot. Corn maze admission also includes a free apple. This farm hosts two events during the fall season. The Harvest Festival takes place every weekend in September, and the Fall Fest runs every weekend in October. See the farm’s website for the latest information.

Middle Valley Farm | 304 Pleasant Valley Road, Mendham

At this farm’s six-acre corn maze, visitors can pick their own pumpkins and explore the farm property. Private events can also be held at this charming field — the staff will work with you to coordinate whatever is needed. So maybe this is your chance for a nighttime corn maze-themed birthday party. The farm takes only cash or check, so be sure to stop at the ATM on your way. It opens in late September and runs through October. Check out the farm’s Facebook page for the latest information.

Stony Hill Farms features a giant 10-acre corn maze to stump visitors of all ages. The Giant Corn Maze, which opened on August 30th, can take anywhere from one to three hours to solve. This maze is designed with a different theme every year. The 2025 theme is Dairy Farmer, which serves as a nod to the farm’s history as a dairy farm. Attendees are encouraged to bring snacks and their patience, as this year’s maze is a real challenge. Tickets are required and can be purchased online. The farm also hosts special events with the maze, such as flashlight nights, so keep an eye on the website for more information. The farm’s Facebook and Instagram pages will have the latest information about weather and schedule changes.

Wightman Farms | 1111 Mount Kemble Avenue, Morristown

The Fall Festival at Wightman Farms includes seven different corn mazes. The Fall Festival, which opened this past Labor Day, takes place every Saturday and Sunday at the Farm, and tickets are required. The seven types of mazes include a giant corn maze, a hay bale maze, a rope maze, a paver maze, a rock labyrinth, a hay bale pyramid, and a hay bale tunnel. About the Playground

According to a press release from the City of Hoboken, the Church Square Park playground is a modern and inclusive playspace. The playground is located in the southwest section of the park, along Fourth Street between Park Avenue and Willow Avenue. “It features inclusive and educational play elements designed to engage young children, including ramped play structures, play mounds, magnet play elements, all-user swings, curved benches, and modern safety surfacing.”

The funding for the playground came from the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund, which was created in 2023 to acquire land for conservation, open space purposes, recreation facility enhancements, and historic preservation in Hudson County.

“Seeing our youngest kids already enjoying the new playground at Church Square Park is a reminder of why we invest in public spaces that help bring our community together,” Mayor Bhalla said via a press release. “I extend my gratitude to our County partners for their support, and to the residents whose input helped design these much-needed upgrades, which will no doubt bring joy to families for years to come.”

The playground renovations are part of Phase 1 of the Church Square Park Improvements Project. Other efforts in Phase 1 include a new lawn area where the old ages two to five playground was, a landscape buffer along the dog run to help reduce noise, and new public restrooms. Work on the Phase 1 projects is expected to be completed by fall 2025.
