When most people think about Hoboken they think of Ol’ Blue Eyes: Frank Sinatra, the “kid from Hoboken who got the breaks,” as writer Bruce Bliven coined him. All over the Mile Square, tributes pay homage to this musical and historical legend, as Hoboken was his birthplace and where he found his fame. The city is decorated with all things Sinatra from restaurants to landmarks that feature all parts of his life.

Thanks to the Hoboken Historical Museum, we have put together a Frank Sinatra Walking Tour around Hoboken to see all of the significant locations that played a huge role in shaping him into the man he was. Keep reading for all the spots to check out on a Sinatra walking tour to see Hoboken through ol’ Blue Eyes himself.

The Stops

Stop No.1 | 415 Monroe Street

frank sinatra birthplace

First on the list is 415 Monroe Street, a “cold water” flat where Francis Albert Sinatra was born on December 12th, 1915 to immigrant parents Natalia Della Garaventa (known as Dolly) and Antonino Martino (“Marty” — explanation to follow) Sinatra. The building was torn down in 1970 but the legacy lives on in the spirit of the town. In 1996, the city memorialized the home’s location with the plaque pictured above. Fun fact: Sinatra weighed over 13 pounds at birth. He was delivered using forceps, which caused permanent damage to his face and ear.

Stop No.2 | St. Francis Church

st francis sinatra

Sinatra was baptized at St. Francis Church, located at 308 Jefferson Street, on April 2nd, 1916 by his Godfather, Frank Garrick. This church continues to serve the Roman Catholic community of Hoboken and holds strong to its Italian roots, offering mass in Italian on Sundays. Despite his many divorces, marriages, and quarrels, Frankie remained spiritual throughout his life.

Stop No.3 | Site of Marty O’Briens at 333 Jefferson Street

Next on the list is 333 Jefferson Street, where his parents, Marty and Dolly owned a bar and grill called Marty O’Briens. Sinatra’s father went by the name Marty O’Brien during his boxing days because of the large Irish population in the area. He named this spot after his boxing persona.  Sinatra used to sing here quite a bit in his day and his presence always drew a large crowd.

Stop No. 4 | Tutty’s Bar

Tutty’s Bar at 610 Adams Street is now a residential area of Hoboken, but it was best known for being the spot where Sinatra and his friends would gather. They would hang on the corner and he would sing a capella. Imagine witnessing an impromptu Blue Eyes concert back in the day — total swoon.

Stop No. 5 | 354 6th Street

Continuing on 6th Street, towards 354 6th Street, was the Jefferson Hall and Weightlifting Club. Sinatra joined this club during the Great Depression. He paid $1 per month for membership.

Stop No.6 | St. Ann’s Church

St. Ann’s Church

The iconic St. Ann’s Church at 704 Jefferson Street still holds mass to this day and continues to host the most visited Italian festival in the area. It was here that Sinatra introduced President Ronald Reagan at a campaign trail stop in 1984. The gathering took place in the church gym where they ate and mingled with fellow Hobokenites over ravioli and sauce.

Stop No.7 | Otok Bakery (Formerly Dom’s Bakery)

^ Dom Castelitto outside Dom’s Bakery, photo from 2018

^ Maren Schmitt in the same spot, now Otok Bakery

For years, Hoboken’s most well-known gem was Dom’s Bakery at 506 Grand Street, where Sinatra and his family used to get all of their bread. Even after Sinatra left town, he would always return home for the best bread in Hoboken (and the world, for that matter).

In January 2023, Dom’s permanently closed its Mile Square doors, leaving many Hoboken residents devastated and wondering what would take the iconic bakery’s place. Enter Otok Bakery, a new bakery from the owners of Schmitty’s that’s continuing Dom’s legacy with its trademark line of bread, made by two former Dom’s bakers who are working the coal-fired oven.

Stop No. 8 | The Firehouse Engine Co. No.5

The Firehouse Engine Co. No. 5 is an important part of Hoboken history as Marty Sinatra served Hoboken as a firefighter and later as a fire captain at this firehouse. This building is now a private residence.

Stop No. 9 | Leo’s Grandevous + Sinatra Mural

leo's hoboken

sinatra mural leos

Even out-of-towners know of Leo’s Grandevous at 200 Grand Street and can smell the delicious Italian food from down the block. This was one of Sinatra’s favorite local spots and he ate there often. The restaurant still reserves a chair for him and honors his legacy with pictures and memorabilia adorning the walls. Leo’s makes some of the best Italian food in Hoboken. Just across the street where the eatery sets up its extended outdoor dining, it commissioned a mural of the star in 2020, completed by a local, female artist. It reads “Come eat with me,” a play on his hit song “Come Fly With Me.”

Stop No. 10 | Jersey Observer Newspaper

Jersey Observer Newspaper hoboken

Once the Jersey Observer Newspaper, located at 111 Newark Street and, originally named the Hudson Observer, Sinatra worked as a copyboy earning $12 a week.

Stop No. 11 | Hoboken City Hall

hoboken city hall

Hoboken City Hall, at 94 Washington Street, is a landmark in and of itself. The city notably honored Sinatra on October 30th, 1947, when it celebrated Sinatra Day. He was driven up to Washington Street on a fire truck by his father, where screaming fans and friends gathered to watch him receive the keys to the city. It was raining that day, but that didn’t stop the crowds from being there.

Stop No.12 | Hoboken Middle School (formerly Demarest High School)

Demarest High School

Sinatra attended Demarest High School on 4th and Garden for only half a year. During that time, many of his classmates and peers left school. Sinatra followed suit and dropped out. Now, this spot is known as the Hoboken Middle School.

Stop No. 13 | The Hoboken Public Library

hoboken public library

The Hoboken Public Library at 500 Park Avenue has a Sinatra collection that was created in memory of his mother, Dolly, who died in a plane crash in 1977. Check out the library’s Sinatra collection for more information.

Stop No. 14 | 703 Park Avenue

In 1927, the Sinatra family moved to this location. His parents chose this neighborhood because it was a much wealthier German/Irish part of Hoboken. It continues to serve as a residential location in town and has been renovated since.

Stop No. 15 | Joseph F. Brandt Primary School

The Joseph F. Brandt Primary School at 215 Ninth Street is where Sinatra attended elementary school. He was quite an animated child and always had a stage presence, even at a young age. His mother made sure that he was always well-dressed.

Stop No. 16 | 841 Garden Street

The house at 841 Garden Street was the house where the Sinatra family moved in 1932 when Frank was 17 years old. He had his own bedroom on the top floor of this family home.

Stop No. 17M | 837 Garden Street

The home at 837 Garden Street served as another residence for Dolly and Marty Sinatra. The one-bedroom and one-and-a-half-bath brownstone apartment still stands today and is currently estimated to be worth about $1.8 million on Zillow.

Stop No. 18 | 909 Hudson Street

The house at 909 Hudson Street was the house that Frank bought for his parents after becoming a big band singer.

Stop No. 19 | The Sinatra Lounge at the Hoboken Historical Museum

hoboken historical museum

Hoboken Historical Museum

The Museum has a dedicated space for everything Ol’ Blue Eyes called The Sinatra Lounge. Visitors can sit back on the couch and watch some of his movies, as well as documentaries about Hoboken, listen to his records on a circa 1920 vinyl player, flip through books about his life, and marvel at two paintings done by Sinatra himself that were donated to the Museum — a true rarity that all Sinatra fans should see for themselves. The walkway has a permanent portrait and plaque in Sinatra’s honor as well — a great photo op if there ever was one!

Stop No. 20 | Stevens Institute of Technology

Stevens Hall

Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 Castle Point Terrace is one of the most beautiful views in all of Hoboken, where Frank Sinatra was presented with an honorary Doctoral Degree in Engineering. This was awarded to him on May 23rd, 1985.

Stop No. 21 | Frank Sinatra Statue

frank sinatra statue hoboken nj

A statue of Frank Sinatra debuted at the Sinatra Park Amphitheater beside Blue Eyes, next to Sinatra Park. The statue was unveiled on his birthday on December 12th, 2021. It’s a large installation that depicts him leaning against a street light post with one hand in his pocket and the other tipping his hat — in true Sinatra form. Of course, he’s wearing a suit and tie, shining a smile.

This list was adapted from the information provided by the Hoboken Historical Museum and is a comprehensive list of major historical sites. There are many more spots where Frank Sinatra left his legacy throughout the city and we invite you to explore that and so much more at the Hoboken Historical Museum.

There’s something to be said about a place that has been up and running for more than six decades. “Come in. Try something. We’re just starting out. We’ve only been here for 63 years,” joked Patty Spaccavento, owner of Piccolos — located at 92 Clinton Street in Hoboken. We can confidently say that this is one of our favorite, no-fuss spots in town, and we are taking you inside the cucina (that’s kitchen in Italian) for a little taste of all that is good in the world. Keep reading to learn all about Piccolos, serving famous cheesesteaks to Hoboken for over 70 years.

piccolos cheesesteaks hoboken

The Man Behind the Counter

Patty’s father opened up shop in 1955 after moving here from Molfetta, Italy. Not only did he build his home and business in Hoboken, but he met his wife here, too — right on Madison Street. Piccolos quickly became popular with locals in the area. Many who worked at factories such as Maxwell’s, Tootsie Roll, Lipton, and many others in Hoboken made Piccolos their lunchtime spot.

Since then, Piccolos has become a Hoboken staple and a gathering spot for all who are hungry and looking for a good meal. Now owned by his son, Patty (also known as Pattyboy to his friends), Piccolos is a hidden gem, but those who know it well know exactly what they’re going to get when they stop by.

The Food

piccolos cheesesteaks hoboken

Many of the dishes on the menu come from family recipes. Patty has been in the kitchen with his father since he was eight years old, learning the ins and outs of the restaurant, naturally. While Piccolos is known for its cheesesteaks and steak sandwiches, it has a ton of other options on the menu, too (read: mouthwatering meatball sandwiches).

piccolos cheesesteaks hoboken

Each day, Patty serves up a Soup of the Day, which could be anything from pasta fagioli to pasta e piselli. And if you really want to feel like you’re in grandma’s kitchen — try the chicken pastina (also known as Italian penicillin — if you know, you know). All of the soups are made from his father’s recipes and give you all the feels. Regardless of what you choose, you will most certainly eat well.

Hoboken’s Best-Kept Secret

piccolos cheesesteaks hoboken

Patty describes his restaurant as Hoboken’s best-kept secret — and he’s right. “This is how I equate our success — the quality of what we do to the smile on the customer’s faces.” Trust us, you will leave with a full stomach and a full heart. Consistency has always been a priority.

Posted right on the wall of the restaurant is an article from The Star-Ledger quoting Patty’s father, “I pass my recipes onto my son. If he changes anything, I’ll break his legs.” His father has since passed but his legacy lives on with Pattyboy.

piccolos hoboken

Humble doesn’t even begin to describe Patty. If you know him then you know he is a true, good-hearted Hoboken guy. He is genuine deep down to his core and loves serving the community. “I just want to help people,” explained Patty. The smile and greeting you get when you walk into Piccolos is like no other. In his heart of hearts, he knows how to make people happy: food, family, and love.

Hours

Piccolos is open Monday through Saturday from 8AM-4PM. While their main course is lunch, Patty serves up a basic (but delicious) breakfast until around 10:30AM. You can’t miss the big Piccolos sign on the building downtown so next time you’re in the area, swing by and grab a bite to eat (and of course, say hi to Patty).

November brings the start to the holiday season and one in particular that often goes less recognized, Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a memorable holiday where we celebrate the men and women who have served our nation in any capacity, any war, or any military branch. It is celebrated annually on November 11th, commemorating the end of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Hudson County, along with other parts of New Jersey and the rest of the country, has several ways that we can honor our veterans, with a special focus on the individuals who are local to our communities. Read on to find out the different places working to help Vets and how to be part of the efforts through donations, awareness, and action.

Visit a Local Memorial | Multiple Locations

hoboken memorial

When asked, most veterans humbly ask that community members simply honor the day by celebrating those who have served in our military by honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. While we know that Memorial Day is dedicated to these efforts, it is important to learn about and pay tribute to those who have served. Hudson County has many memorials and tributes that honor the men and women who fought for our country’s freedom. A list of some local memorials can be found here. The Hoboken Girl was fortunate enough to sit down with local Veteran Vincent “Vinny” Wassman, who served and shared his story with our team. Though he has since passed, his memory and legacy in town remain.

Take everything there is to know about Italian food in the Mile Square and forget about it (yes, dramatic — but hear us out). While Hoboken has some of the best pizzerias in the country right here, Apulia, which opened uptown in fall of 2018 at 1319 Washington Street, is far different from the rest. The restaurant features a truly Puglian (from the Italian region of Puglia) menu with dishes boasting the region’s most notable flavors and delicacies. Locals and out-of-towners have made this place their regular dinner spot, entering as strangers and leaving as family. Read on to learn all about Apulia in Hoboken, a southern Italian food haven.

All About Apulia

Restaurant owners Frank Sciacca and Franco Curci met at well known Ridgewood hotspot, S.Egidio, where Franco had designed and created the menu. Frank worked there while in college for a few extra bucks and the two guys really bonded.

“Franco isn’t my blood uncle, but we treat each other like family,” he previously told The Hoboken Girl. That’s just the Italian way.

Franco’s creations in the kitchen delighted Frank and from there they both knew they had something special.

“The first time I had Franco’s food, I was amazed. He would make things — things I wouldn’t normally eat — and would blow me away,” Sciacca explained. When the two finally collaborated, Apulia came to life.

This isn’t just everyday, run of the mill pizza. Hailing from the beautiful port city of Bari in Puglia, Italy, Franco’s style is authentic and true to his culture. He moved here shortly before S.Egidio opened and brought over generations worth of family recipes and his love for Puglian cuisine. His wife, Pasqua, the matriarch of the restaurant, makes the desserts and brings so much of her life in Bari to the states.

What’s On The Menu

The menu is authentic to the core, featuring flavors and classic dishes from Franco’s hometown. He puts things together that one would never think could work, unique but genuine to his style. The Uccelletti — fresh mozzarella wrapped in spec (smoked proscuitto) — is a must-try.

As diners move through the menu, they’ll be reminded of all of the Apulian touches put into the dishes. From the tomatoes to the pepperoncino, Chef Franco doesn’t mess around with authenticity. The Orecchiette E Rapini — fresh orecchiette pasta, broccoli rabe, and crumbled sausage — is a huge hit with visitors to the restaurant. Orecchiette pasta is a gastronomic symbol of the Apulian region, as are the rest of the ingredients that make up this dish.

Of course, one cannot come to Apulia without trying one of the restaurant’s pizzas, cooked to perfection in the wood-fired oven. We kept it simple with a classic Margherita, but if you’re feeling experimental, there are plenty of unique creations to try.

apulia hoboken new jersey

Another pizza is the Fresca, which comes highly recommended by Ottaviana Notar, a regular guest at the restaurant. “It reminds me of my hometown, Molfetta, Italy,” she boasted about the pizza.

Finally, dessert. The tiramisu is definitely one of the best we have ever tried, both here and in Italy.

For diners really going all out (and with a group of people), definitely try the Nutella Calzone. It’s larger than life and stuffed to the max with all of that nutty-chocolatey goodness.

The Apulia Experience

apulia hoboken pizza

Apulia is a place where many people feel at home. Frank explained how their hope for the restaurant was to allow people to experience the same feeling as eating at their family’s dinner table.

“We just want people to eat good food, talk, and grow closer to one another,” Frank said.

Apulia defies the laws of so many up and coming restaurants. All that is expected of guests is that they sit back, relax, and have a great time with the people they are with. The tables are close, yet intimate and guests feel welcome from the moment they sit down. Looking around the room, there are people talking — truly talking to each other; nobody is on their phone or preoccupied with other stuff. In the warmer months, the outdoor patio in the back is also open for dinner.

Apulia sets the tone for truly authentic Italian cuisine. “We want to be the standard for pasta in this neighborhood,” explained Frank. “We want people to come here and know that this is a place you can come eat good food and make friends.” Hoboken is a small city with so many people from diverse backgrounds, and Frank’s philosophy is that even though we are all different if we stick together — and eat together — we can make Hoboken an even better place to live.

secret entrances hoboken

Getting stuck on the 495 exit of Weehawken to Hoboken is something that newbies experience — and insiders know all too well. What we are about to share will certainly change how commuters get in and out of Hoboken. The traffic keeps getting worse year after year, it seems, but we’re sharing some insider information on getting in and out of the Mile Square. Knowing these back roads will make traveling in and out of Hoboken (and possibly Jersey City/Weehawken) much easier, especially during high-traffic times. Read on to learn about secret ways in and out of Hoboken to help cut down on your drive.

Disclaimer: These streets are always subject to unpredictable traffic and are not guaranteed to be a smooth ride in or out. Jersey Avenue is also temporarily closed for a month as of April 14th, 2025, which may impact your route and incoming traffic. This is to install a sliding floodgate to mitigate the impacts during storm surge events. See our coverage about this here.

Getting to Hoboken from New Jersey/Route 3

Take 30th Street Off of 495

30th-street-hoboken

Route 495 might seem to be a daunting road to take into Hoboken, but there is a relatively easy way to maneuver the traffic here, once you get past the 495 backup getting on, that is. Instead of continuing on 495 and getting caught in helix traffic, get off where the signage says Kennedy Boulevard and continue up the hill (don’t turn right onto the actual Kennedy Boulevard, though!).

Take 30th Street through the lights and onto Hackensack Plank Road, which is another road (but warning: leaving Hoboken and heading onto this road has a residents-only restriction on certain days). After moving downhill, the intersection of 19th Street and Willow Avenue near Hoboken will be on the left.

Take Gregory Avenue

Sometimes, the JFK Boulevard exit is not accessible or backed up. If this is the case, fear not: navigating through 495 and beyond is still doable without the headache of tunnel traffic. First things first, stay in the middle or left lane on 495. It may seem terrifying because those two lanes quickly lead into the Lincoln Tunnel, but they are the fastest lanes. Most people who aren’t familiar with the area stay in the right lane, which moves slowly.

After getting off at the Hoboken exit, move to the right lane and take Gregory Avenue to Hackensack Plank Road. It is one of the best-kept secrets of getting into Hoboken, as this road diverts away from the congestion of the Lincoln Tunnel entrance by driving in from the back, leading to the intersection of 19th Street and Willow Avenue. HG insider tip: Gregory Avenue is incredibly narrow, so be careful with turns and cars parked.

Route 3 Backed Up? Take 1-9/Tonnelle

entrances exits hoboken

For those coming from Route 3 into Hoboken, 495 is usually congested due to the major bridge repair construction and rush hour traffic as the main NYC entryway near the north of Hoboken/Weehawken. Bypass the merging traffic of 495 by exiting on Route 3 and getting onto Route 1-9, also known as Tonnelle Avenue, depending on the direction of travel.

Taking this highway will alleviate traffic congestion and lead to the southwest end of Hoboken.

Here’s how to do it: Once on 1-9, take the Secaucus Road exit up to Paterson Plank Road. This will eventually lead drivers through The Heights, giving the option of making a left onto the South Wing Viaduct, leading to 14th Street, or a right to continue on Paterson Plank Road, which will lead into the southwest end of Hoboken.

Take River Road/Port Imperial Boulevard

river road hoboken

If entering Hoboken from the north (think: Edgewater, Bergen County areas, 95, etc), River Road/Port Imperial Boulevard will lead into Hoboken during off-peak hours — before 7:30AM, between 10AM, and 2PM, as well as after rush hour.

River Road cuts through many major towns and takes commuters along the Hudson River into Hoboken. River Road, which turns into Port Imperial Boulevard and then into Waterfront Terrace, will eventually lead to 19th Street in Hoboken. There are an abundance of lights, so it can be a bit slow, but it’s definitely the more scenic route.

From Jersey City via New York x Ravine Avenue

new york avenue hoboken

If coming from Jersey City Heights into Hoboken, New York Avenue is a great little passageway that allows drivers to avoid the hectic traffic of the one-way streets in The Heights. It may seem scary to pass through this curvy, hilly road, but it saves a ton of time. It is right off Palisade Avenue and can be a bit confusing. Look for the overpass that looks like a road going nowhere, which is Ravine Avenue. It will lead down and around a windy road that turns into Observer Highway.

Take The Shippen Street Route to Hackensack Plank Road

There’s a (rumored) haunted staircase that is another quick way to get to and from Hoboken, most likely if you’re walking or biking (though cars can drive through as well).

At the end of one of the windiest roads in Weehawken, you can find the Shippen Steps, located at Shippen Street in Weehawken near Union City, with an unusually steep set of stairs that takes you down the Palisades Cliffs and onto Hackensack Plank Road. Please note: You’ll still have to walk in a bit of a congested area and cross the bridge into Hoboken, but it’s a nice, quick drive that gets you off the beaten path — plus a bit of history, to boot.

More Walking or Biking to + From Hoboken

Take the 100 Steps or the 9th Street Elevator

elevator steps hoboken

Another way of getting from Hoboken to The Heights or vice versa, if on foot, is to take the 100 Steps in downtown Hoboken or the elevator in the westernmost part of Hoboken.

One set of steps is located at Paterson Avenue and Franklin Street in The Heights and spits you out near the Sky Club area of Hoboken.

The elevator can be found right behind Jackson Street between 8th and 9th Streets. Both provide easy access to Jersey City Heights without even stepping foot into a car, train, or bus. HG insider tip: On Sundays in the spring/summer/fall, the Riverview Farmers Market is in full swing, and not too far away.

Getting to Hoboken From Jersey City During the Jersey Avenue Closure

Soon, Southwest Hoboken will have a sliding floodgate to mitigate the impacts during storm surge events. As a part of the next phase of the Rebuild by Design Project, Jersey Avenue between Harrison Street in Hoboken and 18th Street in Jersey City is closed 24 hours a day for approximately one month to install the foundation of the Resist structure’s sliding gate across Jersey Avenue.

In the meantime, locals coming to and from Jersey City can take the detour in or out of Hoboken via Grove Street, Marin Boulevard, and Henderson Street. If you’re coming from Jersey City, take Washington Boulevard via 18th Street to Henderson Street or take Newark Avenue to Palisade Avenue through Jersey City Heights to enter Uptown Hoboken.

Instead of Taking The Light Rail into Jersey City, Use the Hudson River Walkway or Observer Highway Bike Lane

hudson river walk hoboken

If a quick escape into Jersey City is on the agenda, look no further than the Hudson River. There is a great little passageway between Downtown Hoboken and Newport, Jersey City, and is easily accessible on foot or by bike. The walk has stunning views of downtown Manhattan. Locals can also bike along the Observer Highway bike lane right into Hoboken for a quick commute.

In order to access this walkway, go to the Light Rail Station at the Lackawanna Train Station in Hoboken beyond the New Jersey Transit Trains and continue walking on that path along the water. It will eventually lead to Newport.

These are just a few of the best and quickest ways of getting into and out of Hoboken, besides the normal routes.

Remember that many of these streets are the hidden back roads of our cities and are subject to traffic, accidents, and construction, but they are better than the well-known major roads at times.

presidents visit hoboken jersey city

While Hoboken and Jersey City are just small pieces of land when it comes to the United States’ geography, we’re no strangers to having presidents visit our area. In honor of President’s Day, we’re taking a trip down memory lane to share the various presidents who have visited Hoboken and Jersey City to show their love for our neck of the proverbial woods — and maybe eat some delicious food, too. Read on to find out more about presidents who have visited Hoboken and Jersey City.

In 2017, former Presidents George Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama joined forces at The President’s Cup at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City. The three former Presidents were seen embracing each other in a photo taken with JC Mayor Steven Fulop. The camaraderie shown in this picture restores our faith in politics and reminds us that at the end of the day, we are all just human. The NJ State Golf Association details that Liberty National is one of four golf clubs in the United States to host The President’s Cup, an international golf competition. President Donald Trump has also been reported to have visited a course in Jersey City on a separate occasion.

Joe Biden in 2012

After the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, former President Joe Biden visited the Mile Square to tour the Hoboken Terminal after suffering severe water damage from all of the flooding. While here, former President Biden made sure to stop by the iconic Benny Tudino’s for a slice and even sat down to talk with pizzeria owner, Bari “Benny” Drishti, for a bit — may he rest in peace.

President Biden also made it a point to swing by the now-closed Hudson Tavern to visit bar owner Tom Brennan (brother of Former President Obama’s National Security Advisor). In a YouTube video, He was spotted walking outside, interacting with Hoboken residents, and even squeezing in a few selfies at the Hoboken PATH train.

Ronald Reagan in 1984

Ronald Reagan made his debut in Hoboken at — what better than — the St. Ann’s Italian Festival in 1984 as part of his campaign. As he ate with other Hoboken residents and parish members, he spoke about what led him to Hoboken (if the answer wasn’t zeppoles, then he was duped).

The invitation to the festival looked so appetizing, however, that he just couldn’t turn it down. Sources say his wife even said to him at one point, “Honey, I think you ought to go to Hoboken.”

And although Sinatra already preached about his hometown to Reagan, he felt compelled to pay the Mile Square visit, especially to try one of our famous zeppoles.

Woodrow Wilson in 1919

A post shared by Hoboken Museum (@hobokenmuseum)

During World War I, Woodrow Wilson and his troops were based out of Hoboken. The Mile Square served as the main port for major shipping and passenger lines. Being a city right on the water was incredibly helpful during this time and Hoboken became a military town. According to The United States World War I Centennial Commission, former President Woodrow Wilson declared that all enemy aliens were not permitted to “live, work, or even travel within 100 yards of docks, piers, and waterfronts,” which left a thousand German families without homes. Hoboken even went through a Prohibition in order to prevent soldiers from drinking, closing 278 of 338 saloons throughout the town.

Teddy Roosevelt in 1909

Teddy Roosevelt traveled a lot throughout his lifetime. A photographer captured a blurry photo in front of an Abercrombie & Fitch sign on the Hoboken waterfront before him boarding a ship departing for Africa in March 1909.

If that’s not enough history for you, do not fret. Hoboken’s history can be truly appreciated by visiting the Hoboken Historical Museum at 1301 Hudson Street — as this short article is just the tip of the iceberg. Read more about the museum here.
