In 2025, Jersey City locals will have not one, but three locations to get their Cangiano’s fix. In early 2024, The Hoboken Girl reported that the Italian deli, market, and sandwich shop is expanding from its original Hamilton Park location to two more Jersey City neighborhoods. Per an exclusive conversation with the Cangiano’s team in December, construction was already underway at the forthcoming Journal Square location, with the Coles Street restaurant to follow soon. As of May 2025, signage was going up at the new Journal Square spot. The Cangiano’s team shared with HG in June that the Journal Square location would soft open on Monday, June 30th — and now, it’s officially open in Jersey City. About Cangiano’s

Cangiano’s is an Italian deli, market, and sandwich shop located in Hamilton Park at 225 Pavonia Avenue. The brick-exterior building seems to be constantly buzzing with neighbors popping in for a cup of coffee after the school drop-off run, grabbing a sandwich for a quick work-from-home lunch, or a last-minute addition for dinner. There is something for every moment of the day here, not to mention seasonal and holiday specials that are as good if not better than what Nonna would make.

The store has a grocery fridge with items like cheeses, yogurts, and other perishables, while the freezer section has all of the pre-made delicacies a person could want like lasagnas and ravioli. The dry goods section is stocked with items imported from Italy, with beautiful pastas, sauces, and more. There is a dessert case with a rotating selection of sweet delights, and fresh bread — always — behind the counter.

Hoboken Girl readers voted Cangiano’s the best deli in Jersey City in 2024, 2023, 2022, and 2021. It’s a popular spot for catering trays and other large-scale serving options, which is handy for holidays and other festivities. The team goes all out at Christmas time, decorating the exterior with shiny red ornaments and stocking the store with classic Italian holiday treats like panettone and cookie platters.

New Spaces

In March 2024, founder Cosmo Cangiano said that ideally, both spots would be complete by the end of summer 2024. “The plans are there, the equipment is purchased, we’re just waiting for the construction,” he said.

While things took a little bit longer than expected, the team confirmed with HG in December recently that the Journal Square spot, located at 615 Pavonia Street in the Journal Squared building, is already under construction and aiming to open in the first quarter of 2025.

“It will be a sandwich shop with a hot bar,” Cosmo said of the Journal Square storefront back in March 2024. “The hours will be something like 11AM to 7PM and the focus will be grab-and-go items like salads, desserts, drinks, and sandwiches.”

The second spot will be at 316 15th Street in the Emerson Lofts complex, which includes the Soho Lofts and Hudson House apartment buildings on Coles Street between 15th and 16th Streets. This location will be easily two times the size of the original Hamilton Park spot. “We’ve hit our limit in Hamilton Park,” Cosmo said, referring to the store’s ability to add more equipment which could expand its menu. “This space will have a pizza oven, gelato, a fryer, a dry-aged meat case,” he said. “We will be able to offer a lot more, like fried ravioli and mozzarella sticks.”

This location is still a little ways away, but the team shared that while “the larger [location’s] opening is [still] to be determined,” locals can expect a debut “sometime this year for sure.”
