The post Is Your Gel Manicure Safe? A Guide to TPO-Free Manicures in Hoboken appeared first on Hoboken Girl.

Gel manicures have been a self-care staple in nail salons and spas for the past decade. However, this popular beauty treatment has recently come under scrutiny for a specific ingredient found in certain brands of polish. Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide, often referred to by its acronym, TPO, is a photoinitiator that, when exposed to UV rays, hardens from a liquid to a solid. On September 1, 2025, the European Union added this ingredient to its list of banned ingredients for beauty products, prompting questions around the globe–how harmful is this product and are there gel polishes that do not use this ingredient? We did a deep dive on what this ingredient is, why it’s harmful and its fate here in the States along with where to get a ‘safe’ gel manicure in Hoboken. Read on to learn more about this beauty ban and how to work around it in the Mile Square.

best-gel-manicure-hoboken-nj

A Quick History of the Gel Manicure

While the technology for gel manicures has been around since the 1980s, further development of the popular service started to really take shape by the late 1990s. Shellac, the gel polish brand, revolutionized gel polish, making it more durable, longer-lasting and more accessible to nail salons across the country when it came on the scene in 2010. The style of nail polish became so popular that even the Smithsonian Institute published research about Shellac polish in 2014. Pop culture and social media played a role in the popularity of gel manicures with celebrities from Kylie Jenner to Cardi B, Cynthia Erivo to Sha’Carri Richardson showcasing intricately designed nails on the runway, at the Olympic Games, and on red carpets.

What is TPO and why is it being banned?

TPO is the ingredient in gel polish that makes it do what traditional nail polish cannot. It’s a photoinitiator that, when exposed to UV rays, hardens from a liquid to a solid. This gives gel manicures their signature shine and patent-leather-like finish. But it’s not just the nail industry using this highly effective molecule. TPO is used in teeth whitening processes, car bumpers, and roofing, to name a few. It has water-resistant qualities and provides a highly durable exterior.

According to PBS, the European Union recently classified TPO as a Category 1B CMR substance, which means it has shown carcinogenic or mutagenic properties or it’s toxic to reproduction. The EU has very high standards for beauty ingredients. If an ingredient shows CMR properties during animal testing, that ingredient is banned from use in cosmetic products used on humans. Despite many experts sharing that TPO is only harmful if orally ingested by humans, as of September 1, 2025, the EU decided to ban gel polish using TPO based on its properties.

Not All Polish is Created the Same

modern nails dazzle dry

While TPO is the most popular photoinitiator used in gel polish, there are a number of other ingredients that act the same without the harmful properties. Ingredients like TPO-L, ITX and more are strong alternatives to TPO that are used by many major brands. Here are the brands that are currently TPO-free in the United States:

  • OPI
  • Essie
  • Sally Hensen
  • Gelish
  • CND Shellac
  • Apres Nails
  • Manacurist
  • Zoya
  • Kiss New York
  • ProNails
  • Tenoverten

There are currently no plans to ban TPO here in the United States. American cosmetic ingredient standards are much more relaxed than in other parts of the world, with very few national bans on ingredients passing since 1938.

So where can a ‘safe’ manicure be found in Hoboken?

@nailsby_mariang

It’s important to note that TPO is, technically, only found to be harmful if orally ingested. During the gel manicure process, there is virtually a 0% chance of oral ingestion, making all polish technically safe to use. The great news is that every nail salon in Hoboken carries at least one TPO-free polish brand, so gel manicures can be enjoyed worry-free around town. Some of the brands listed above have limited TPO-free collections, with some of the brand’s other collections still using the ingredient in question. It’s important to take note of the ingredients in each bottle to ensure that the chosen color is actually free from the molecule.

Sustainability efforts take many forms throughout Hoboken. From composting and recycling to thrift shops and more, the city has many businesses that keep environmental friendliness top of mind. The City of Hoboken as a whole recently stepped up its sustainability efforts by passing the “Skip the Stuff” Bill, which requires all restaurants offering delivery to provide a ‘skip the stuff’ option, which would allow customers to choose if they want plastic utensils included in their delivery or takeout orders. The goal of this bill is to reduce landfill waste and is part of Hoboken’s ongoing Climate Action Plan and the goal of Zero Waste. In addition to this ordinance, many businesses are taking additional steps toward protecting our planet. We’ve rounded up a list of businesses in Hoboken taking sustainability seriously. Read on to find out how Hoboken businesses are practicing sustainability.

Ujamaa Cafe: The Background

Simply put, Ujamaa Cafe is a vending machine with breakfast, lunch, snack, and beverage offerings from approved vendors for the community to enjoy. The machine is located at Hudson Pride Center in Jersey City and run by the Coalition for Food and Health Equity (CFHE).

When asked about the founding story of the cafe, CEO and Founder Dr. Leeja Carter shared with The Hoboken Girl, “In 2021, I recognized the urgent need for our food assistance clients at CFHE to access healthier options beyond our meal delivery program. I envisioned a place where residents in need could freely obtain nourishing food. Thus, the Ujamaa Cafe was born, providing open access to food fridges. Through innovative technology and data analytics, Ujamaa Cafe curates each fridge to reflect the preferences and needs of the community.”

The word Ujamaa is Swahili, meaning “brotherhood” and is honored during Kwanzaa as the fourth principle to celebrate “cooperative economics”. The core meaning of Ujamaa is the practice of building and maintaining businesses within the community and sharing the profits together which is exactly what the cafe does. “At CFHE, we understand that true family means operating with minimal barriers to partnerships, service, and initiatives,” shared Dr. Carter.

How It Works

Ujamaa Cafe provides a “cashless, de-surveilled grab-and-go vending option” providing “health-forward pre-made breakfast, lunch, snack, and beverage options”. These items are stored in refrigerators located within trusted community agencies, ensuring “open access” for patrons to view and select products. The genius of the model lies in its simplicity and accessibility: “All that’s required is a single electrical outlet,” making the business community-centric and sustainable. Patrons can easily see meals, snacks, and desserts available at any time in the vending machines, along with nutritional and allergen information. Patrons can also view all food options from their phone or computer.

The Food

The availability of healthy food is achieved through carefully cultivated partnerships with restaurant affiliates. Becoming a Ujamaa Cafe Restaurant Affiliate involves a “long application process” including an online application detailing business information, a narrative on Mission Alignment, and product information, followed by an interview for finalists. This rigorous vetting ensures “the nutrition facts of those items well before they are even created for the fridge,” confirming that “every item in the fridges has been checked and approved for their nutrition facts, and can be considered a healthy option.” Dr. Carter shared that Ujamaa is always looking to expand its partnerships.

A Look to the Future

The future is bright for Ujamaa Cafe. With a daily growing need for food security right in the backyards of Hudson County, this affordable and healthy option is vital. “Looking ahead, we have developed an ambitious 10-year plan to establish Ujamaa Cafes in 50 cities across the country.” Dr. Carter shared. “Through extensive research, we have identified neighborhoods that would greatly benefit from the Ujamaa Cafe initiative, which aims to enhance food access, support neighborhood redevelopment, and foster community engagement. I envision Ujamaa Cafes flourishing nationwide and, hopefully, internationally one day, all led by the community and promoting health.”

How to Get Involved

With a goal of further expansion, community involvement with the cafe is essential. The CFHE is a non-profit taking donations and support to fulfill its mission. The coalition hosts ticketed events throughout the year, directly benefiting Ujamaa Cafe. Assistant Coordinator Sanjiv Sunderram suggests joining the exclusive Ujamaa Love Collection on Substack to access exclusive content, live conversations, offers, and early notifications about events. Volunteer opportunities are always plentiful as well, she shared. For businesses looking to become an approved vendor, applications to start the process and eligibility requirements can be found online here.
