There’s nothing like a good ol’ plate of comfort food to make you feel like everything is right in the world. And when it comes to comfort food with a healthy twist, Northern Soul is seriously on-point with their new-ish menu. We recently paid the downtown Hoboken bar and restaurant a visit, and wanted to share all of the delicious entrees and picks that they have on the menu. Read on about why we’re obsessed and prepare to want to eat here.
The Run-Down
Northern Soul, located at 700 1st Street, is all about making fresh and healthy dishes in a familiar and friendly environment. Healthy food is all over the new menu, which is NOT common for a bar — a place where vegetarians and meat-eaters can eat together with everyone being satisfied. Plus, all their drinks are tried and tested and only the best craft beers make it into the restaurant.
Location + Atmosphere
This down-down spot surprisingly has a laid-back environment making it the perfect place for a chill day or night out with friends. Along the left of the expansive space sits a pool table, so there’s no lack of entertainment, either, especially when you’ve had a couple drinks and get into competitive pool shark status #nojudgement.
When to Visit:
Northern Soul serves brunch, lunch, and dinner so regardless of when you’re craving some comfort fare, you can stop in for a bite. The kitchen is also open until 1AM, so you’re even set if you have a late-night craving.
Brunch items include burgers, veggie ones, too, egg dishes, monte crisco, and gluten free waffles, to name a few. Some lunch and dinner faves are buffalo cauliflower, black bean quinoa chili, salmon, skirt steak, cauliflower steak, and a bunch more. It’s also important to note that the fries are suuuper crispy and delish, and the spicy margaritas are TDF.

And Now, THE FOOD:
We tried some noteworthy items on the menu, plus some drinks, for lunch — and they are seriously delicious:
Drinks were on point and super fresh. But the food is really where it’s at:
We ordered the Salmon Avocado BLT, a side of asparagus, plus ghee mashed potato and citrus and herb quinoa. The whole menu is marked as Vegan with a (V) or Gluten-Free (GF) so you’ll know beforehand that you can eat certain items if you have dietary restrictions.
The real MVP? The buffalo cauliflower: crispy on the outside and fried to perfection, but soft on the inside. So good, in fact, that even the most picky of meat eaters *might* just forget that it’s a vegetable.
