India’s “fastest growing” pizza chain is making its way to New Jersey. The international chain, La Pino’z, is opening its newest location in the space which formerly housed Monteleone’s Bakery at 741 Newark Avenue in Jersey City. The India-based chain has expanded to locations open in Canada, the United Kingdom, Dubai, Australia, and Tanzania. The Journal Square restaurant will mark the franchise’s first ever United States location. Monteleone’s Closing
Monteleone’s Bakery had been conducting business out of the 741 Newark Avenue location since 1946. Operated by the same family across three generations, the business was started by Guido Monteleone, a Sicilian immigrant who came to the United States in 1909. Following his passing in 1959, the bakery was passed down to his sons and then grandsons, Pete, Mark, and Guido Monteleone III. The beloved spot was known for its homemade baked goods, particularly its cakes and cannoli shells.
The business closed following a temporary closure for a summer vacation in 2023, after which it did not reopen. It was later confirmed by a member of the Monteleone family that the bakery would be closing permanently in the We Grew Up in Jersey City Facebook Group.

La Pino’z is an India-based pizza chain with more than 750 locations throughout its home-country, with recent expansions into other countries including the United States’ neighbor, Canada. Founded in 2011 by Sanam Kapoor, the restaurants first location opened in his hometown of Chandigarh, India, with the intention of bringing something “different” to the pizzeria scene. The restaurant’s menu includes flavors from around the world, with Margherita pies, a Nashville Hot Chicken Pie, and the ever-controversial pineapple Hawaiian pie. There are also plenty of pies incorporating Indian flavors, like Tikka Masala, Korma, Tandoori, Butter Chicken, and more.
The Jersey City opening is set to be the restaurant’s first expansion into the United States. Per Jersey Digs, there is no timeline yet as to when the restaurant will be expected to open.
