Hudson County has become known for excellent dining experiences at every budget. The area’s rich cultural diversity has resulted in a wide cross-section of cuisine that nails local restaurateurs’ traditional heritages and boldly invents fusion tastes to draw crowds and kudos. Read on for a highlights tour of some of the many restaurants, cafes, and food trucks that are giving Hudson County its foodie credentials.

So Many Choices!

Options for dining out in Hudson County just keep multiplying. Jersey City alone has close to 1K restaurants to choose from, with new eateries popping up all over the place. Neighborhoods like Newport in Jersey City — that previously quieted down in the evening without restaurants for residents — have seen a sudden flurry in new hot dinner spots. Multiple years of Wine Spectator Awards and our own Local Girl write-ups have likely brought on the need for table reservations at the most popular places. It seems that it’s Hudson County’s culinary moment in the sun.

Recognizing Old-School Icons

From the relatively recently established iconic locals like Zeppelin Hall (est. 2009) to the long-lived Fiore’s of mozz fame and glory (est. 1913), Hudson County has been performing fabulous culinary feats to manifest all our food fantasies for ages. We respect our elder restaurants even when their fare has changed with the times and the arrival of new generations — like Liberty House’s Maddy Rose, where the view is historical and majestic but the menu is fresh and fabulous.

New Jersey commuters have had a whirlwind week of news headlines coming from NJ Transit and the New York / New Jersey Port Authority. The most recent of the headlines was an announcement on Friday, November 14th, that the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line will undergo a 10-mile expansion with seven new stops. Read on for more information about the new railway expansion plan.

Building into Bergen County

The Hudson-Bergen line currently only extends as far as North Bergen. The new plan, titled “The Northern Branch Project”,  from NJ Transit will bring the Light Rail tracks 10 miles further north to an anticipated terminal at Englewood Hospital. There will be seven stops added across five municipalities, including North Bergen, Ridgefield, Palisades Park, Leonia, and Englewood.

The project is still in the early stages of planning, and riders will likely have to wait a year or two before construction begins. The environmental impact statement considers potential impacts of the project on surrounding areas, including noise, wildlife, air quality, infrastructure, traffic patterns, and more.

Per press release, NJ Transit announced that it issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to hire a contractor to prepare a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). As the proposal is currently written, the electric railway would be located along West Side Avenue in North Bergen and the existing railroad right-of-way owned by CSX Transportation between 91st Street in North Bergen and the northern Border of Englewood.

Northern Branch Corridor Project Proposal via NJ Transit

A previous version of the plan, titled “The Northern Branch Corridor Project” was published for public commentary in 2011. The original plan extended service to Tenafly, which was opposed by residents and community leaders.  The Federal Transit Administration rescinded its Notice of Intent to review that Environmental Impact Statement in 2023 since environmental conditions have changed since its writing in 2007.

What Officials Say

“NJ TRANSIT remains committed to extending the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail into Bergen County,” said NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri. “This RFP is a concrete demonstration of that commitment. Providing mass transit options to all regions of New Jersey takes cars off the road, cleans the air we breathe, and drives economic activity, sustainable housing, and a multitude of other benefits.”

“As one of the most densely populated counties in the state, Bergen County welcomes additional mass transit options,” Bergen County Executive James Tedesco added, “The Northern Branch project will fulfill that need and enhance the lives of all who call Bergen County home. I thank NJ TRANSIT for continuing this vital project.”

As part of the EIS process, there will be an opportunity for public comment once the draft is complete for a minimum period of 45 days.

You need nature. Your body actually craves it. Digging your hands in rich soil and then watching things grow is food for the mind, body, and your social network. And just your luck, we’ve found that Jersey isn’t called the Garden State for nothing. In fact, there are quite a few plots of land allotted for urban dwellers to try their hand at gardening. Read on for a hand-picked bouquet of just some of the many welcoming community gardens that have taken root and sprouted up all around Hudson County, New Jersey.

About the Gardens

While community gardens are a longtime staple in Europe, there are plenty here in the Garden State. Some community gardens — like Ogden’s End in the Heights neighborhood of Jersey City — are a secret world tucked away amidst all the clatter and hustle of a totally urban environment. Others — like the raised boxes at the center of Miller Park in West New York or the gated enclosure of beds found in North Bergen’s Braddock Park — appear more functional. The well-organized grid-plotted gardens serve the practical purposes of drawing pollinators, enriching the surrounding ecosystems, and providing learning opportunities for area residents. A third type of community garden — the micro kind, like the delightful Hope Garden in Jersey City — has lovely wisps of fragrance and color nestled into small spaces between parking lots and city streets.

community gardens hoboken jersey city hudson county nj

Many municipalities have — as Secaucus does — a free application process to access community garden plots. These gardens exist because of volunteers who often schedule plant swaps and teach-ins. Trying out a dose of free soil therapy is easy with the help of the Hudson County Chapter of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey. The NPSNJ leadership hosts in-person and virtual gardening events and can assist Hudson County residents in connecting with their nearest community garden. If no nearby neighborhood garden bed exists, they will point toward the tools to start one.

The collective effort of these community gardens provides all sorts of dividends to those who join in. There’s nothing like eating vegetables fresh from the garden and telling friends that the herbs in their salad are homegrown. Hudson County’s community gardens are generally grown with adherence to organic methods — using no pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or sprinkler systems. The communal aspect of the gardens means newbies can learn how it’s done.

Should you notice anyone experiencing these symptoms, you should call 911 immediately. Wetting the skin, using cold cloths, soaking clothing in cold water, and sitting in an ice bath are all recommended methods to cool down until help can arrive. Heat exhaustion, heat syncope, heat rash, and heat cramps are also potential heat-related issues.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, wear comfortable clothing, and try to limit exertion during these extremely hot days.

The main warehouse of Dykes Lumber has been located at 1899 Park Avenue in Weehawken since 1947. The iconic yellow signage once stood alongside the Maxwell House coffee billboard and the lighted Malibu Diner sign, creating as good a welcome mat as one could find when entering the northern part of Hoboken. Dykes, the proverbial last man standing, is getting torn down as part of the regional Gateway Development Project. The lumber shop has now moved its Weehawken location to North Bergen as part of a legal settlement reached as part of the region’s Gateway Development. The purchase means that the entire Dykes property will be razed — and while the fate of the iconic signage is unconfirmed at this time, it’s likely it’ll suffer the same fate. Read on for more about the future of Dykes Lumber in Hudson County, NJ.

What is the Gateway Development Project?

The Gateway Development is a regional project, supported by federal, state, and local governments, to improve rail infrastructure. Dozens of smaller projects make up the overall effort, some of which have focused on adding additional tracks, bridge improvements, and reinforcing existing infrastructure.

The most significant project within the portfolio is the Hudson Tunnel Project, which will upgrade the rail infrastructure between Newark, New Jersey, and Manhattan’s Penn Station. Since Hudson County is the Jersey home base for the Hudson River railway crossings, a significant amount of work will be staged and/or take place here.

What’s Happening to the Dykes Property?

Dykes was founded in 1909 and is a lumberyard that is the region’s go-to spot for moulding, cabinets, building materials, doors, and more. Professionals and DIY’ers love the wide selection. There are eight other Dykes locations throughout New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The Hudson County Dykes location is now at 6001 Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen.

The Dykes property was identified in a 2021 study by the Federal Railroad Agency as geographically relevant location for staging materials and construction equipment for the Hudson Tunnel Project. The property is 2.4 acres in size and was purchased by Amtrak for $60 million, per a legal settlement with the business in July 2024.

A statement from the law firm Carlin, Ward, Ash & Heiart LLC, which represented Dykes, revealed that the transaction was most likely the largest eminent domain settlement in the New Jersey. The sale price came after experts demonstrated the true valuation of the lot for housing and other businesses. Part of the settlement allowed Dykes to remain in the Weehawken location until March 31st, 2025.
