What Happened

Hoboken resident Amanda DiPasquale, founder of popular food truck Amanda Bananas, was walking her dog near the W Hoboken, located at 225 River Street, on Saturday evening, August 2nd. She tells The Hoboken Girl, “I heard little screams coming from the sewer. Hoboken’s fire and police showed up and saved the kitten.”

Amanda took the kitten to Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG), where she found out the kitten was a male, and the doctors checked him out. “He got a clean checkup at VEG,” Amanda said.”One of the officers contacted me, saying he was interested in taking the kitty. This morning, he contacted me again, saying he wants to pick it up after work.” The kitten was estimated to be about two months old and weighed 1.5 pounds.

That officer was newly sworn-in William Vera. Officer Vera is a second-generation Hoboken Police Officer; his father, Detective Sergeant William Vera Sr., retired in 2018. Officer Vera picked up the kitty from Amanda on Sunday, August 3rd. He and his girlfriend named the cat Hudson

Officer Vera shared this statement with The Hoboken Girl

“I responded to a call with the Hoboken Fire Department about a kitten trapped in a sewer on River Street. When we got there, you could hear the little guy crying from below the grate. The Fire Department carefully opened it up, and we were able to safely get him out. He was scared and a stray. I didn’t want him to end up alone, so I started calling around to friends, other firefighters, and officers, hoping someone might be able to adopt him, but no one could take him.

That’s when I started thinking maybe this was meant to be. Just recently, my girlfriend’s cat passed away. She’s a big cat lover, and I’ve always been more of a dog guy. I’ve grown up with them my whole life, but because of her, I’ve started loving cats. So, when I called her, she didn’t hesitate. That was that. We decided to name him Hudson, after the Hudson River and River Street, where I found him. He’s already made himself at home.

I became a cop like my dad, who retired in 2018, to make a positive impact and help people, but sometimes the ones you help are smaller than you expect.”

It’s unknown if Hudson will get unlimited cat treats for life at the W, but it was a night to remember for all involved.
