Recently, construction permits at 57 Newark Street in Hoboken were spotted, prompting excitement of a new taco restaurant coming soon. Locals were speculating that it might somehow be related to the Los Tacos locations in New York. However, The Hoboken Girl team has recently learned from its owner that the new taco spot will now be called ‘Mexico Tacos,’ and is not related to Los Tacos in NYC. Read on for everything we know so far about the new taco spot opening on Newark Street in Hoboken, New Jersey.

What We Know About The Building

After a fire broke out at 57 Newark Street in 2017, the building which formerly housed residents and a hot dog shop (Papaya Dog) — along with Dina’s Kiss and Makeup (the girlies know!), was demolished, leaving the space vacant.

Since then, the space has been revamped and reconstructed to become a residential space with retail spaces on the street level. On March 26th, a reader spotted a construction permit notice signed by Russell Basile, the owner of longtime Hoboken + Jersey City pizza business, Basile’s Pizza.

The Hoboken Girl reached out to the owner for more information, as the permits stated, “taco restaurant as per plan,” stirring excitement among residents. Basile shared with The Hoboken Girl team in late April that the new taco spot was to become a Los Tacos location, but since then, it has been updated to be a spot called ‘Mexico Taco’.

Previously, the interior did have “Los Tacos” artwork and signage inside, and Russell shared with The Hoboken Girl team that it was going to be called, “Original Los Tacos,” not associated with the NYC chain. A reddit thread also noted that paper had gone up in the windows as well, after the Los Tacos signage went up — indicating some additional changes to come.

Soft Opening May 23rd
