The Hoboken Girl Sandwich on Alessio’s Menu Now Raising Money for a New Non-Profit

opitmum

In honor of International Women’s Month in 2024, The Hoboken Girl partnered with local restaurant Alessio’s to create The Hoboken Girl breakfast sandwich — a fundraiser for York Street Project, a Jersey City–based nonprofit supporting individuals in need of shelter, food, and education across Hudson County.

Thanks to popular demand (and our amazing readers), the sandwich became a permanent menu item. Every six months, HG’s portion of proceeds is donated to a new nonprofit. In 2024, we raised over $5,000 for the York Street Project and the Hoboken Public Education Foundation. During the first half of this year, we raised $3,250 for Hudson County CASA, which advocates for neglected and abused children.

For the latter half of the year, our new charitable partner is The Flow Initiative. You can order The Hoboken Girl sandwich at any of Alessio’s four locations to support the cause — and your breakfast order.

Every six months, we’ll announce a new nonprofit partner. Read on to learn more about The Hoboken Girl x Alessio’s collaboration, the story behind the sandwich, and what’s next for our “sandwich for a cause.”

The March 2025 Update

After selling nearly 2,000 sandwiches in just 30 days last year, it was clear that our The Hoboken Girl x Alessio’s collaboration was here to stay — and continue giving back to the community.

Every six months, a portion of the proceeds from The Hoboken Girl sandwich is donated to a different local nonprofit, helping raise both funds and awareness for organizations making a difference in Hudson County. Most recently, we donated $3,250 to Hudson County CASA, a nonprofit that connects children in the foster care system with advocates who help ensure their voices are heard.

Now, the sandwich will support The Flow Initiative, an organization dedicated to achieving menstrual equity through access to period products in Hudson County and beyond.

The Collaboration

This collaboration took months to come to fruition, and the entire Hoboken Girl team worked with Alessio’s on the ingredients, taste-testing multiple versions of sandwiches before picking our favorite — and we can confirm that it’s delicious (and gluten-free, if you want it to be!).

Where to get it:

*Breakfast is served from 7AM-3PM

The sandwich was only supposed to be available at all Alessio’s locations for March 2024, where The Hoboken Girl team donated our portion to the York Street Project. But due to popular demand, we brought it to the menu FULL-TIME, and now give back to a different non-profit each quarter.

About Alessio’s

Alessio’s, which has a location at 539 Park Avenue in Hoboken and 99 Franklin Street in Jersey City, is an Italian pizzeria and cafe that serves up everything from coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and pastries to pizza, paninis, and gelato. Owner Luca Infantino was born and raised in Italy and moved to the United States in 2011. After living in Weehawken, Luca fell in love with Hoboken and paved his way in the fashion industry before taking the jump into food service and opening up the Hoboken location in 2020. The Jersey City location opened in summer 2023, and the cafe’s next project — Terrace by Alessio’s — opened in Hoboken’s Northwest Resiliency Park last spring. Luca is still paving the way for his Hudson County empire, opening Casa Italia Gourmet Market in Hoboken earlier this spring and his newest Alessio’s location in Weehawken just last month.

Alessio’s — named after Luca’s son — quickly became a staple in the Mile Square, known for its authentic Italian products and the real feel of an Italian cafe. The spot prides itself on the quality of its food, customer service, and being involved in the community. “We are proud to be a “community-based” business, a safe place for children, students, and families. Alessio’s always supports charity requests, events sponsorship, etc,” Luca shared, “Partnering up with The Hoboken Girl has been a dream come true.”

About The Flow Initiative

The Flow Initiative, a Jersey City-based organization, fights to achieve menstrual equity for people who menstruate. This group is just one example showing that New Jersey is leading the way in achieving this equity.  The stats surrounding period poverty and access to period supplies were shocking to Jersey City resident Eiko La Boria, prompting her to found The Flow Initiative.

Eiko La Boria started The Flow Initiative upon learning that period poverty is not just an issue in developing countries, but right here in the United States. Her mission is to achieve menstrual equity through access to period products in a world where there is no shame or stigma surrounding period poverty. According to the organization’s website, “To date, The Flow Initiative has passed seven menstrual health bills, educated 40,000 students on menstruation and period poverty, and distributed 1.8 million menstrual health products worldwide.”

In 2023, The Flow Initiative achieved a huge advocacy milestone with the passage of Bill A1349, which requires New Jersey schools to provide free menstrual products to students. A second bill that The Flow Initiative helped champion, A3211, passed just a few months later, making feminine hygiene and sanitation products available in NJ shelters.

The Hoboken Girl has also partnered with The Flow Initiative for several years to host a Period Supplies Drive for Hudson County locals experiencing period poverty.
