Earlier this year, neighborhood bar The Stewed Cow announced its closure. The announcement hinted at the new owners’ plans to bring a new concept into the space, without divulging much information. The space, located at 400 Adams Street, has been quiet for the past few months, but neighbors have recently noticed signs of activity in the space. Read on to learn what we know so far about the new concept coming to The Stewed Cow space in Hoboken — and our exclusive with its owner.
The Stewed Cow Closure
The Stewed Cow announced that it would be closing its restaurant on June 1st, 2025. The former owner, John Avoletta, previously shared plans with HG in 2023 for the space to be converted into a “food-forward” upscale dining restaurant, stepping away from its sports-bar theme.

Per the restaurant’s statement, the space will now be taken over by the owners of City Bistro and Johnny Pepperoni, in collaboration with Chef Cliff Crooks of Food Network‘s Chef Bootcamp. The new owners are, “Planning something special to continue the tradition of great food and community in Hoboken.”
The space was previously known for its dog-friendliness, outdoor-dining, beer, and Texas-themed menu. The menu featured Southern-style meats like braised roast pork, brisket, and chicken wings. Tex-Mex-inspired dishes were also prevalent on the menu, including fajitas, burritos, and tacos. The spot also had a brunch menu, served on weekends.
Before Stewed Cow, longtime residents will remember Gaslight in the space, another brunch favorite in the area.

As of October 2025, HG has received reports from residents that the renovations are underway. We reached out for confirmation of what was to come to the space.
Owner John Avoletta shared exclusively with The Hoboken Girl that the new concept will be named “Viv & Jules,” and is set to open in the late fall with Chef Cliff Crooks at the helm.
He shared the new concept will “encompass adult dining with a global menu.” The menu will consist of shareable plates, some large-format dishes, and craft cocktails.
The restaurant is set to open in the later fall, with a date TBD.
This post will be updated with any further information as we receive it.
