The 15th Street Roadway Improvement Project looks to transform the road to a more protected, accessible, and resilient pathway for all users, per a press release from the City. It includes the reconstruction and elevation of the roadway and sidewalk along 15th Street between Madison and Adams, as well as the resurfacing of 15th Street between Willow and Park.

The 15th Street project also incorporates several Vision Zero improvements, including:

All Saints Episcopal Day School
  • 10 refuge islands to reduce pedestrian crossing distances across 15th Street + calm vehicle traffic
  • A raised two-way bikeway + widened sidewalks from Madison Street to Adams Street that marks the first segment of Green Circuit to be built in the North End Redevelopment Area
  • A speed radar feedback sign to promote driving at the 20MPH speed limit
  • 25 high-visibility crosswalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps to improve accessibility + pedestrian safety
  • Eight Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) to increase the visibility of pedestrians crossing 15th Street to approaching vehicles
  • New pedestrian-scale decorative lighting

There are also resiliency improvements to help mitigate nuisance flooding in the area included in the project, with upgrades like:

“Anyone who has driven, walked, or biked on 15th Street recently, knows it’s like navigating a minefield of potholes, old cobblestones, and uneven pavement,” Mayor Bhalla said via a press release. “This project goes well beyond creating a smoother road surface. It reflects our commitment to safer streets and sidewalks, sustainable infrastructure, and a more resilient Hoboken.”
