Hoboken Parking Updates: Summer 2025

Liberty Psychological Services

Most of the time, our DMs are a pretty fun place to be. We get the inside scoop on celebs visiting town, businesses opening or closing, and some really cute puppy pics. We get great questions from readers, too, about buildings under construction or other local issues. But one theme has emerged that required a bit of digging: changes to Hoboken’s parking rules and regulations. So, what exactly are these changes? Read on for the latest about parking in Hoboken, New Jersey.

What Happened to Free Parking on Sundays?

The City Council voted to end free Sunday parking on Washington Street in fall 2024. The City shared a Nixle alert in October 2024, alerting residents to the change:

“In an effort to improve parking availability by increasing the turnover of parking spaces along Washington Street for patrons of local businesses, the City of Hoboken will extend paid parking requirements to Sundays along Washington Street, beginning on Sunday, Nov. 17. This follows the Hoboken City Council’s adoption of an ordinance last month. The new policy will require payment for parking from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at a rate of $0.75 for 15 minutes or $3 per hour, seven days a week (previously six days a week).

Vehicles with a Resident On-street Parking Permit will continue to be exempt from paying the meter in resident permit parking zones (green sign/white letters, and white sign/green letters), seven days a week.

This change, developed in partnership with the Hoboken City Council Transportation & Parking Subcommittee, also aims to reduce double parking on Sundays, which poses significant safety hazards for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, and contributes to congestion, by increasing parking turnover on Washington Street.”

It only applies to Washington Street — the other areas of town still have free Sunday parking.

Why Can’t I Park More Than 2 Cycles in the Same Spot?

Numerous readers have reported that Park Mobile, the mobile app used to pay for parking in Hoboken, won’t allow them to pay for more than one, four-hour pay cycle in the same spot. For this question, we asked Marilyn Baer, spokesperson for the City of Hoboken, for more information. Here is her answer:

“Metered time limits encourage turnover, which increases parking availability and curb access. This can reduce incidents of double parking and improve safety and accessibility to Hoboken businesses. Time limits and meter rates work together with the goal of achieving the best practice of 85 percent occupancy in business districts, so that one to two parking spaces may be available on a commercial block.”

What Else is Happening With Hoboken Parking?

Marilyn went on to share that the City is considering adjusting rates for parking in municipal garages. “These new rates would affect transient parking only and will have no impact on monthly users or resident overnight parking rates, which will remain unchanged. The increase proposed will be roughly $1-2 per hour, if not less. Specifically, the cost for up to a 24-hour stay would rise by only $4. Even with the increase, the new rates remain lower than nearby private garages.

These proposed changes are necessary to account for rising maintenance and operational costs. The last rate increase was in 2018, and the lack of adjustments since then has left the Hoboken Parking Utility with limited resources to maintain facilities, update outdated systems, and fund garage repairs. The additional revenue will be reinvested into modernizing municipal garages and off-street parking infrastructure to ensure it continues to meet the community’s needs.”

A proposal to raise the rates was introduced at the July 9th City Council meeting. It passed on first reading, and the second reading, which would mean approval and implementation, hasn’t been scheduled yet. This piece will be updated when the date is announced.
