South of the Clouds, a Chinese eatery serving authentic Yunnan-style rice and noodle dishes, has opened its second location in downtown Jersey City at 313 Grove Street in the former Salt + Ginger location. South of the Clouds, a Yunnan restaurant with roots in Manhattan, has opened a second eatery in downtown Jersey City. The spot first arrived on the JC food scene in early 2025 at 313 Grove Street.

To celebrate its arrival, South of the Clouds hosted a soft opening event on January 29th that featured various special menu items that could only be found at its Grove Street location, such as beef aortas, made with hot + spicy Pu’er Tea sauce; grilled chicken thighs served in housemade sour + spicy sauce; Yunnan-style truffle fried rice; and mala stir-fried squid tendrils.

For the past two months, South of the Clouds, which classifies itself as a BYOB restaurant, has served a similar menu to its parent bistro across the Hudson, featuring rice and noodle-based dishes, such as its Signature Yunnan Crossing Bridge, made with slow-simmered chicken broth, black-bone chicken, premium ribeye, pork, and fish slices, bean sprouts, tofu skin, and crispy pork lard.

Those with a sweet tooth can also find unique desserts on its menu, such as the Yunnan fresh milk rice cream, coconut juice with tapioca, and handmade coconut jelly. See South of the Clouds’ full menu here.
South of the Clouds is open every day from 11AM to 10PM and also provides online ordering through its website.

According to Jersey Digs, the family behind the Yunnan eatery has been in the restaurant business for some time. South of the Clouds’ first location, which can be found at 16 West 8th Street in New York, was launched in 2018 by Liheng Geng, the son of the owners of Yun Nan Flavour Garden in Brooklyn.
The newest Jersey City spot just marks the beginning of its expansion, as the team plans to open its third location in New York at 1187 Amsterdam Avenue soon.
